Olympic medalists question

Post by *Paul » Thu, 24 Aug 2000 13:28:26

I have been compilng alltime Olympics medalists stats, when I noticed my
total for Matt Biondi was 7 gold, instead of 8. This was because he
gained a gold in the 1992 4 x 100 medley relay, but didn't swim in the
final. My question being: Has this always been the case, that
participants in the qualifiers get medals? For instance in the same
event in 1976 the US used 8 swimmers to win. Did they get gold medals
too?

TIA

Yes, in the past all people that swam the relay, be it finals or
prelims got a medal.  Therefore eight people could get a medal.  From
what I understand this year that will not be the case.  Only the people
who swim in the finals will be awarded medals.

That's a pity.  Angie Kennedy got a silver medal from Atlanta for
swimming the fly for Australia in the prelims... and that's the way it
should be... a TEAM effort.  When a footy/basketball team wins the
grand-final, do the inter-change/bench players not get a championship
ring? of course they do... so it should be in swimming.

But do players who played in the preliminary final,  then not in the
grand final get medals/rings? Maybe they do , I dunno.

I was aware that in recent games you were only allowed to change a maximum
of 2 swimmers from the Heats to Finals in the relays therefore allowing 6
people to swim?
