I was rather surprised by the number of people who picked "natural
ability".  Since it is specifically asking about the breaking of
records, this would seem to imply that people think modern-day swimmers
have more natural ability than did swimmers of the past.

None, Kerry. It was just a general observation.  :-)
A true one though. A sensible poll would let you check
off as many as you agree with, as well as provide blank lines to
add your own. But we live in the era of the sound bite...

I agree.  I was just wondering if there were two you agreed with...  ;-)
