Are thongs any good for competitive events where they're allowed?
I figure with the minimal hip coverage there'd be less wet weight
involved and more freedom of movement.

They'd certainly make me swim faster chasing after them  =)

I think more importantly you'd want comfort without drag, and material
composition can also make a difference....
