World Masters Swimming Championships vs. World Masters Games

Post by Wayde E. Mulhe » Thu, 30 Mar 1995 01:47:54

These two activities are separate.  The World Masters Swimming Championships
will be in Shefield as noted and is limited to just aquatic sports (swimming,
diving, syncro, and water polo).  The World Masters Games are a gathering,
somewhat like the olympics which encompass a wide range of activities, not
just limited to aquatics.

The last World Masters Swimming Championships were in Montreal in July 1994
and the last World Masters Games were in Brisbane in September 1994.

Hope this helps.

How did these two events get slotted the same year (1994)?

The 1st World Masters Games were held in August 1985 (Toronto); the following
year (July 1986), the 2d FINA/MSI World Masters Swimming Championships were
held in Tokyo, Japan.

Yes it does appear to be strange but the reason I believe is that the
World Masters Games were supposed to be held in 1993 but the host city
(in the US I think, the venue escapes me for the moment) pulled out at the last
minute. Brisbane offered to host the Games but only if they could have more
time to stage them so it came to pass that in 1994 they went ahead in
Australia.

Now with the next Games in Portland, USA in 1998 they will clash again with the
World Masters Swimming Champs and I supose will continue to do so.

Mind you the events are very different and probably appeal to
different swimmers anyway and of course to people who want to have a
go at other sports at the same time.

The World Masters Games were originally scheduled for Minneapolis. Not
exactly sure why they backed out. Mpls is a great town (I live 90 miles
away) and have hosted many great events. ie. Final Four Men & Women, Super
Bowl, World Series, etc. , But I it would be difficult to outdo the
Australians, particularly the group from Brisbane. They hosted 23,000+
competitors from 69 countries and utilized 20,000 volunteers. The event
was very well organized. Everyone in Brisbane was accommodating, from bus
drivers to store clerks. The whole town (1,000,000) seemed caught up in
the spirit.  On my last Saturday there they had a parade downtown to
welcome the athletes from Queensland that performed at the Commonwealth
Games. 1000's turned out waving flags and cheering. I've never seen
anything comparable in the U.S. for amateur athletes. Portland will have
to work hard to equal the Aussies, but I'm looking forward to attending
because of the great experience in Brisbane. Also, I am in training for
the World Championship in 2046 when I will be 103 and I finally get my
stroke perfect.

Minneapolis/St. Paul (Chamber of Commerce/Dept of Tourism??) bid
for the World Masters Games without ever contacting the local
Masters groups.  They thought it would be a great event.

The contract allowed them to back out if the World Games before
them were not profitable.  When they thought they were going to
lose money they pulled the plug.
