Looking for Ski-Doo engines

Post by TIM CURR » Tue, 17 Mar 1998 04:00:00

I've had my Web-TV now for a while and have been on this site since the
first day. I have been noticing  that the only engine people are looking
for are for Ski-Doos. That tells me one thing, Ski-Doos are junk!!!!
People tell me how fast and bad they are but when you're sittin' in the
trails far from home broke down, well then you're not so bad!!!!! My
girlfreind has aYamaha SX V-max 700, and I have a Polaris Storm and have
not had one problem them them. I'm not trying to***anybody off, but
maybe people should shop around and not beleive what everybody tells ya.
I like to go fast just like the next guy, I also want to be able to get
back home!!!!!! See ya on the trails hopefully not broke down.

Tim,

I don't think the Ski-doo(Rotax) engines are junk at all.  IMHO, as a whole I'd
put the Rotax motors at the top of the heap for horsepower, longevity and
dependability.  The reason that many people are looking for Ski-Doo motors is
often to put them into other sleds, often Polaris.  Also they are extremely
popular for racing as they can make a whole lot of power dependably.  Don't
think for a minute that I'm biased toward Ski-Doos, because I happen to ride
Cats, and have had absolutely great luck with them, but if I were to switch,
I'd be on a Ski-Doo in a minute.

Now that I've given my peaceful $.02 worth on this issue, let the flames begin
boys!

Give it to him!!!

Yeah.  What happened to the 97 440 last year?  Thought they recalled every
one of them to put new engines in.  Didn't hear that about the Ski Doo did
we?  Oh and by the way I have a Ski Doo engine for sale.  I think it will
end up in a Polaris.

That was a wonderful speech, but I would have to say you are wrong on
your impression of Rotax, there is a company somewhere in the states not
sure, it is some type of a gyro mini helicopter (recreational) aircraft
and guess they could have used any engine they wanted, and guess what it
is powered by a Rotax, maybe that may tell you something. I own a Rotax
in my Formula 500 and it is the sweetest and most economical 90 hp twin
I have seen in recent years. I think you need to go around to some
dealers and ask some of the mechanics about a manufacture who had a
serious crankshaft problem a few yrs back.

People are looking for Rotax engines for the same reason people are looking
for small block Chevys to put in their Fords.People want more horsepower for
their Polarasses and that's why you see so many WANT ADS  for a Rotax, not
FOR SALE  like your Sturms!!!!!!!!Pull your head out,ROTAX rules!!!!!

Tim,

Lucky for you that you didn't buy a 96 Storm. [the ones that needed many
part in a season.]

Your post proves three things:

You have better taste in women than sleds.
Tina knows more about sleds than you do.
Tina has better taste in sleds than men.

Looking for Ski-Doo engines

If you had knowledge beyond your narrow world you might KNOW the answers here.
Rotax is the only snowmobile sized two stroke certified for air power. That
means they have demand beyond the snowmobile world for their engine. It is the
reason you see ultra light companies use Rotax. They are the only sled engine
company to cater to this market. It comes with a whole new set of rules and
certifications.
And over time this group has seen every engine being looked for. It means the
searcher was too cheap to get it locally.

And only a few of the Rotax models are actually sold for aircraft
purposes...  Like apples and oranges you can't compare the environment, use
or duty cycles between the two uses.

FWIW, a buddie of mine bought several Kawasaki "ultra-lite" engines
and was amazed to find they are identical to early Arctic Cat and
Kawasaki f/c snowmobile engines. What was really strange is there
was no Fan or shrouds! They must get enough cooling from the prop.???
Anyhow, all my 25 year old Kawi' motors are still running strong.

Anyone know where I can find a 550 INTERCEPTER???
