Opinions wanted on comunicators???

Post by Ryan Klan » Mon, 13 Oct 1997 04:00:00

Hi, My group is looking into getting comunicators...
But as usual, we don't know what kind to go with....
Our price range is about $180 cdn..
I've heard that the Comunicator 49 is a pretty bad choice.
What about the Chatterbox 49???   I'm really looking into
the new FRS radios and getting one of those with a headset...
Another thing....how usefull is the VOX function with all
the wind noise and engine noise?? can you even use it? or
is PPT(push to talk) the only good way to go??

Thanks for any help in advance...
-Ryan

I'd agree that the Collett 49 Mhz models are a pretty bad choice, Ryan.
Ours worked OK for 2 or 3 days and were nothing but trouble after that.
When they finally died, I was glad to see them put out of their (our)
misery. I love the concept of a voice-activated, helmet-mounted
communicator, but Collett won't be getting any more of MY money!!

>Our group had the Collets with voice activated headsets and they were a

pain. One of us invariably would be dialed too sensitivly and deafen us all
at WOT uless you were about 100 yards away. Distance varied greatly  by snow
dust where you could see the guy but he couldn't hear you. We all opted for
hand held unit with external mics as we all hang around boating and stuff in
the summer

learn some good hand signals and install mirrors!  It's less money and a lot
 less frustration!

FS: Collett 49MHz communicators,  Cheap!
