98' XC600 Secondary Clutch Rattle

I fired 'er up last weekend, getting in-patient ya know. Anyway at idle I
noticed a rattle coming from the secondary clutch. So I shut her off and got
out the factory service manual, it didn't do much exept make me realize I
was going to have to open it up and take a look. Well I did and everything
seems to be in order, just as the illustrations show (one big washer and 2
small shim washers. So I cleaned it all up and put it back together and
started 'er up again. But the rattle is still there, anyone else notice
this?? With the belt installed I can giggle the clutch and here the rattle,
as soon as the belt comes off no more rattle. Is this something to do with
the eternal adjustment, last sled I had did not have this (yes it was old
'85 to be exact). I checked all the tolerances and everything seems right.
Figured I would ask all of you before the dealer.

Thanks!!

Damm spell checkers, that would be external not eternal. Although an eternal
clutch wouldn't be all bad would it??

I noticed the same thing on my 98 XC700.  I think that it has made that sound
from the secondary the same way that you are describing since new, and after
2000 miles and a newly installed cluch kit (new helix and secondary spring), it
still makes the same rattle.  I guess maybe it normal??  Hopefully someone
knows the answer to this noise.

I've got new xc500, not seen snow yet.  There is a rattle also, but it seems
to be the sway bar rattling in the slots in the skis.   Just thought I'd
chime in FWIW.

I'm going to take a SWAG at this one.  I'm guessing that what you are
hearing is the washer inside that takes the pre load setting.  You know
that external cam and plungers that sets the unloaded shive width?  If
the adjuster is backed off and the belt holds the shives apart, there is
going to be no pressure on this hardened washer.  I can understand that
under certain conditions that it could rattle in the clutch causing the
noise that you are hearing.
