ZL 500 vs Formula 500

I am looking at buying either a ZL 500 or a Formula 500. Does anyone have
any experience with these sleds? Top speed, fuel mileage, handling etc....
Any information would be apperciated.

I have the Formula 500 and as far as top speed goes I would say if
both sleds were set up properly it would be somewhere in the low 90's
handling area i hear the Cats have a nice front suspension, The Doo is
ok,Rear suspension is fine no complaints, Fuel mileage the Ski Doo hands
down I have gotten 17.5 and a heard of an owner with a 98 Formula 500
with Rave went 98.2 miles on 5.26 that is 18.8 mpg. power I have never
ridden the ZL 500, maybe some Cat owners can give you some input. But
the Formula 500 is a screamer, I have 96 studs in the center area only.
And I keep saying i want to get a bigger sled, But when riding out there
with other bigger sleds on the trail, The lightweight and response of
this sled is always impressive, even when other riders jump on it and
(non Ski Doo owners) actually say it is a fun sled, very reliable, 1300
miles on mine with the original belt second set of plugs, i use regular
Bombardier oil, haven't tried the synthetics yet. and when you stop at
the filling station is where you see who really eats up the fuel, and
most of the time the Ski Doo Formula 500 will take the least. by the way
in case you didn't know the, in the grass drag world when Ski Doo
introduced the SLS in 96, it won the 96 national title in the 500cc
class, again in 97 and again in 98, with the Arctic Cat 500 comming on
strong, so ride em both and you make the call, I know you would be happy
with the Doo, If your closest dealer is Cat, don't pass that up either,
there is nothing like a dealer who will work with you, and not think of
you as just a number.

                                        Good luck in your Choices.

Chet ;
Very well put . I have just one thing to add. If the person is a
really agressive rider, I'd go for the Cat , say always riding at
8/10th or more, otherwise, That Ski-doo 500 is almost flawless.(ya ya,
I know  about the recall on the rave springs etc.)
                                                     Kevin ....

Well, I just put 480 miles on my ZL500, riding with a friend who just
got a new Formula 500. Other than the recall for the Formula I'd rate
them about the same. I think the Cat has a little more pop, so it's
easier to swing around in the turns, but the Ski Doo seemed to track
with less effort.

I wouldn't get rid of my Cat, and he wouldn't get rid of his Formula.
I think you'll do OK with either sled.
