99 Polaris XC 500 or Cat ZL 500 ?

Post by LARRY MCDONAL » Mon, 23 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I'm going to buy either a 99 Polaris XC 500 or an Arctic Cat ZL 500
(carbs not EFI). I'm wondering if anyone can help me understand pro/cons
for either one. From what I can tell from magazines without having
ridden either one, the XC is quieter, has less vibration, more power at
lower rpm, has flat slide carbs where the ZL has round, and the XC has
digital CDI ignition vs. regular CDI for the ZL. On the other hand, the
ZL has 3 inches more rear suspension travel than the XC. Also the ZL has
a proven  Suzuki engine where the XC has a new engine that may still
have bugs that Polaris is famous for. Has anyone ridden either/both and
can give me some advice?
Thanks in advance
Larry

I think the XC will match the Cat in performance but will provide a better
ride, handling, and duarability (look at the problems Car had last year(.

The problem that Arctic Cat had last year was extremely limited.  It
basically affected only 600cc EFI models, nothing else.  It was a tolerance
flaw from Suzuki.

Rode both in the spring for a day....both very nice...polaris will be
close to the cat in drag with the coupler blocks out..(needs the launch
)
Polaris much quieter machine..Cat airintake Very loud.
On the killer bumps..the cat rear way  ahead here..
Average stuff...equal
Turning..both about same
To me it was basically...polaris quieter...cat rear better..otherwise
tie..

Mileage could be a big diff here...cat lousy,...but the polaris  an
unknown here...

Find a good dealer and be happy!!

Wait a minute hold the phone!  Polaris XC 500 has Xtra 10 suspension.
You said that the Cat has 3 inches more?  Thir*** inches of travel?
Way way too much.  Last year I had a 96 XLT SP that had 12 inches of
travel and was tipsier than hell.  More than once I was picking the
machine up off its side!  More suspension will also cut into a good
holeshot!  Thats why racers tie thier suspensions down!  Thats also why
Polaris has gone from putting Xtra 12 on their sleds to Xtra 10 on
almost all of the 99s.  I have an XC 500 sitting in the barn but we have
no snow yet here in NY.  I will let you know how it goes when the snow
gets here.

Way too much???

Never riden a zr or what???

Handling isnt an issue...A zr is NOT  any extra 12 ..thank god!!...In
the big bumps they have a bit more travel..In these conditions it
works..Tippier..not a bit more than a xtra 10..

Some things just work..Check out the NEW TIPPY  EDGE polaris 440 racer
with its 13 in  same as cat travel suspension...

I owned both the zr and xtra 10 last yr..No problem with either..but the
cats better on the  BIG ones just as the sc10 is...the xtra in work on
these conditions...

...otherwise both ok.
But dont compatre either to the  12 in grasshopper..eeekkk!!

I own a ZR500 and I've had no problems at all.  The sled performed
flawless.  Clutching very good.  Your not going to notice any difference
between a digital and non-digital ignition.  Just costs more if it needs
repairing.  The ZL's Ryde FX shocks are top notch.  I doubt that the XC
would be better or worse.  If you're into big bump riding the ZR is the
way to go.  Either way with the XC or ZL you can't lose.

Well according to the book in front of me the Polaris 440 racer (XCR)
has the Xtra 10 suspension.  They never even had a 13 inch suspension.
And not to say that the Xtra 12 was bad, I loved it for the most part.
But the law of physics says that 13 inches of travel will be more tipsy
then 10!  UNLESS, there is something that I am missing!  (Which I'm sure
there is).  But anyways I have to agree that these are both excellent
sleds and the guy will be happy with either.  Lets worry more about
getting SNOW!!

Happy trails

EVEN KNOW THE ZL MAY HAVE MORE TRAVEL, IT WON'T RIDE AS WELL.
THE NEW DOMESTIC MOTOR IS A HOME RUN!!!

What you're missing is the pre load, race sag or ride-in, whatever you
want to call it.  The Cat sits lower and uses the 13" travel to absorb
the big bumps when the rear fully extends.  Otherwise ride height is
unaffected.  That's what all the magazines say is the key to Cat's rear,
low spring settings (pre load) with heavy damping.

I think that the rear of the xc will be as good as the cats because of the
new pps shock that is on the xc. I don't think you would have a reliability
problem with either engine. Even if there were to be a problem with the new
xc 500 motor it would be fixed pretty damn fast because so many people
bought this sled. Both are about equal in power. Anyways, if you want a good
review on these sleds go to
http://www.snowconnection.com/Features/sledreviews/Shootout/500s/500....
This is a good review on 500 class machines with the zl and xc included.

Both  sleds and probably equal in the rear suspension but the cat has better
top end and lead the pack with their front suspension and handling.  The Cat
motor does get bad gas mileage though, we'll see how the XC5 does on mileage

You will find the PPS shock on the consumer model XC's but not on the real
XCR terrain racer.
I heard that it is too much of a compromise. Great for moderate to
aggressive trail riding when you want to mix in some trail cruising but not
the best for all out racing.
