1979 Yamaha Enticer 340 hard starting...need help !

The ignition is strong, but when cold, it doesn't get adequate fuel
to
the carb.  Once I loosen the fuel line at the carb, crank engine, it
starts !  What am I missing....thanks in advance !

It's a quiet morning so I'll take a shot at this.
A couple questions:
I don't understand how loosening the gas line would provide more fuel to the
engine. Are you sure there is a fuel shortage? Have you tried simply
spraying some fuel into the carb when starting? What do the plugs look like?
Will the engine warm start okay?

These models used a "fuel enrichener" mechanism rather than a choke, and the
adjustment had to be right to get good starting. When you flip the "choke"
lever, does the cable lift the fuel enrichener rod?

Yes, the cable does move the rod---it starts every time now, just
cranks a little longer than what I had originally expected, since this
machine is new to me.  how does one adjust this enrichener rod for
better starting?  Thanks again for your help.

I've long since forgotten the exact amount of slack there should be in the
cable, but I think it will work okay if it's set so when the ***lever is
off the rod sit fully in and there is a small amount of slack in the cable.
You should remove and clean the rod and the opening in the carb where the
rod goes. Water tends to collect there and corrode the metal.
