used sled, what do I buy?

Post by G davey5 » Thu, 19 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I'm in the market for a used sled but I'm not quite sure what to look for.
I'm limited to around $1200, I would guess that will put me into the 85-
89 range. I need to get somthing that is good on the trails that we have
here in western Mass., is reliable, has a ton of spare parts around and
can carry my girlfriend on the odd occasion.
People are telling me to look at the Indys, but I have'nt seen one for
under $1800 that was in any shape to ride. Everyone says to stay away from
the Cats ( although I have seen a few in my price range).. The Ski Doos'
have been reccommened by a couple of folks ( because the engines are "
bullet proof "). The only ones I've seen advertised ( in my price range )
are the Safaris and Stratos.
What I would like to have is something in the 400cc to 500cc range, fan
cooled, does not need to go 100mph, won't get stuck in 10" of wet slushy
snow. and it must be RELIABLE... ( I've had to walk out at night more that
once, and it is not fun. By the way, I'll never buy a Moto-ski Sonic
again).
So any thoughts? what would you good folks recommend for a good used sled
?

The best sled during those years where the Indys.......Try find one in
good shape and you'll be happy you bought one.  Cats were to heavy during
the late 80's, and ski-doo did'nt have the speed or tech that other sleds
had in my opinion. (they liked to hang on to old technology).  Yamaha made
many good light sleds with good suspensions for the late 80's.

If you can't afford the sled you want, get a early 80's yamaha for cheaper
and have fun.  Early 80's cats (80,81) were easy starting and reliable if
you bought the fan motors like the eltigre 5000, but they had stiff
suspensions not good for trail riding.

Hope this helps

Have you thought about a Phazer ?

Yamahas hold up well, just check the suspension and insure the shocks
and wheels are in good shape. The motor is basically bullet proof.

An older indy would be fine if you can come across one.

I concur.  A phazer is the way to go.  they aren't primo technology
nowadays, they can't carry two people but they are reliable.  A friend of
mine put his in the drink, we hauled it out, dryed him off, started it up
and he has been running it since then.  If you run into a group of 5 or
more people on the trail odds are one of them will be riding a phazer.
There are millions of these things around, and parts are plentiful.  I got
my wife a 86 with 2100 miles on it, fair condition (no crashes, no torn
seat, dings and dents on belly) for 1300 bucks, but some new clips on it
and it's a fun sled.
