97 zr580 efi won't start

Post by Pat Murph » Tue, 22 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Rode 100 miles Saturday morning with no problems. Latter that night I rode
about a mile and was losing power. Sled would not go faster than 40mph. When
I let the throttle go it died. Tried new plugs and it started an died within
30 seconds. Took it to my local cat dealer and they spent all day on it and
have not found the problem. They said it is getting gas and spark. Is there
any fuses on this sled since it is a EFI? I filled it up with gas just
before it died, maybe I got some bad gas? Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Pat

I had that exact problem Friday night on my 97 ZR580 EFI.  I thought I had some
frozen water in my gas, and dumped some isopropyl into it, but it did not work.
I too changed out the plugs and within seconds I was doing no more than 20mph
and the sled would die.  Plugs looked really fouled within that short time.
Dealer found that the lower coolant hose had rubbed against the frame and leaked
all of my coolant out.  He said that the computer probably new something was
wrong and forced it into rich mode.  The reason my hi-temp light didn't come on
was do to the fact that the connector to the sensor fell off and so far and
can't seem to make it stay - even with crimping.  Luckily I had shut it off when
I knew that I was going to go no further only doing 20 !!!

That happened to a friend with a 98 powder special efi.  He had no top end.
Turned out it was his stator. I guess there are 3 different circuits on the
stator for the efi and one had blown.  He changed the stator and all is
well.

Bad news though, he said it was 800 bucks for the stator.  Makes the 210 for
the polaris one seem cheap!

hmmm, if its getting spark, and theres compression then its gotta be a gas
problem.  Try draining the gas and putting in new gas, other than that how
are you sure gas is getting into the cylinders?  Perhaps there is a clogged
filter or jets in the carb.

you've ruled out everything else if you have spark and compression....

That's funny about the sensor connector falling off.  Mine did on my 96 EFI 580, and
I burnt it up!!!!!!!!!!

Found out it was a crank seal. Does this sound reasonable? Part is about 20
bucks, and a couple hours of labor to replace it. It took them approximately
10 hours of labor just to find the problem. Should I be charged for labor
for them to try and figure out what the problem was?

Thanks.

It depends how reasonable they are, if its something they should have known,
especially if its a recurring problem, I wouldn't pay a full 10 hours for
troubleshooting.  Besides, how can you spend 10 hours troubleshooting a
problem like that, a good sled mechanic should be able to figure that out in
less time.  I'd try negotiating with them, say offer to pay 5 hours labor
total or something, and politely remind them that they might want your
future business....
