Engine problem....what have I done?

Post by Peter Boon » Mon, 25 Dec 2000 06:57:27

A friend and I got the sleds out today for the first ride of the season
today and all did not go as planned. When I started my sled (97 F-500 Doo)
it would not idle without blipping the throttle but ran well enough that I
thought I would give it a run to see if it would clear up. The sled stopped
running after about 4 minutes...dead. My riding partner came up to me and we
decided that we better get to the trailer. I started the sled and it ran ok
but on the way back the sled stopped dead again...we pulled the left plug
out and saw that the tip of the plug had melted...uh oh.  Managed to get it
started and limped back to the trailer. The sled is now at the dealer who
will be cleaning the carbs and checking the compression. I have been really
looking forward to riding over the holidays.......WHAT HAVE I DONE?  :((

Cheers and Merry Christmas to all

The number one reason for burning down an engine early in the season
(melted sparkplug electrode is a symptom) is due to dirty carbs. What
happens is that over the summer months the residual gas in the carbs
can leave a varnish build up, which in theory reduces the effective
size of the mainjet, preventing the correct amount of fuel from passing
through. This will cause your motor to run lean, which can cause a
burndown. You didn't say if you were running full throttle or not, but
I'm guessing yes? Also, the pilot jets are much smaller than the mains,
and any clogging here would just about close them off. Poor idling is a
symptom of dirty/clogged pilots. The good news is, it can be a quick
repair, if your dealer has the parts in stock.

Shut the gas off and run the sled tell it quites in the spring. Also try to
suck out all the old gas out of the tank. This prvents the gas from getting bad
and plugging you carbs.
