97' ZR580 Reliablity?

Post by TIGE » Wed, 22 Aug 2001 10:38:53

I hear nothing but bad things about the 97 ZR580 cats...
I only know one guy who has one and he had top end problems...
Anyone have some real-world experience with these sleds?
Not too many around this neck of the woods...

Thanks

This is my story. 14 months old the drive clutch shaft broke in half, Cat
covered it. 24 months old the mag cyl burned up. The boot from the throttle
body was all dry rotted like it had been stored outdoors. It was only outside
for about 5 nights total as I do most of my riding from my cabin where it is
garaged. 500 miles later the exhaust pipe split burning the same cylinder. I
couldn't take it anymore, I fixed it and sold it bought a 99zrt600 and love it.

There is more changes dedicated to that sled in the cat performance
manual than any other. I imagine if you made all the changes (jetting,
clutching, exhaust) that it may be a decent sled. The only person I know
who had one spent more time fixing it than riding it.

I had one of these new and rode it for 3800mi over 2 years. I loved the
sled. It handled better (IMO) than my 99 ZR and the batteyless EFI was
wonderful. The primary was replaced under warranty and the stator was
replaced under warranty in April of the second season. Other than that no
problems.

I have a PS-580 EXT, so I'm assuming it's the same engine as the ZR (?)
Mine was used, bought it around 3000 miles. about 3500 I did loose a
piston
edge, which scratched the cylinder. Other than that, everything else is
fine,
however since that many miles, I decided to replace both pistons (and
pins, bearings)
so I'd have a fresh engine to enjoy. I might get some play out of it for
another
season or two, then will have a much better opinion on the engine.
I'm really happy with the chassis, suspension, etc. Just wish I had
reverse.
