Still, losing Kirk wasn't easy. While Evy Scotvold wished her well, he didn't
hide his displeasure that Kirk has yet to speak to him since her decision.

"It was a cold choice," he said, referring to hearing only from her father.
"I'm sad and disappointed to see it happen that way."

I don't think it the comments made about Jenny Kirk were very nice. She's a
young girl who just lost her mother.  If I had lost my mom at that age I'd be
"adrift" too.

The Scotvolds sound like they have huge egos . I am sure they have lost other
students before . They are cutting back anyway and planning to eventually
retire .Jenny has been thru alot this year .

I'm not surprised they're resentful.  They did postpone their retirement
specifically for Kirk.  Colette Irving was a pretty big disappointment as well.
They still have Louann Donovan though.

Personally, I can't wait to see what kind of changes and/or improvements Kirk
can make under Callaghan (although his programs for Nikodinov were just this
side of appalling).

Just a thought here....  Do you really think that the Scotvolds don't
bear *any* responsibility for not only Kirk and Irving deciding to leave
them, but quite a number of their other pupils like Matt Lind, too?
There *has* been something like a mass exodus from Cape Cod this season,
and it seems kind of far-fetched that it would all be coincidental.

FWIW, Evy in particular has long had a reputation in New England of
being very tough on his students.  I don't know of any incidents where
he's gone over the line into outright abuse with any of his students,
but after the year she's had, I can see how Jenny could have felt like
putting up with routine verbal or emotional bashing from her coach was
not helping her.  But Callaghan doesn't exactly have a warm and fuzzy
reputation in that area either, so who knows.  Maybe Jenny just wants
to get away from a place where she's been unhappy.

Exactly.

Plus, IMHO, she needs a boost, a bump, a radical change, or something if she
wants to be one of the top 3 U.S. ladies.  I suspect that she's learned what
she can from the Scotvolds, so if she's going to be more than an "almost", she
needs to look elsewhere.  If, as Sandra says, Evy S. is known to be tough on
his students, she might be inured to that kind of treatment and thus might not
be put off by Callaghan's similar attitude.  So it could work.

OTOH, has Callaghan ever coached a woman for very long?  I vaguely remember
that he had, but I can't remember who.  I suppose my real question is who,
other than Todd, has stayed with Callaghan for 3 or more years?

Absolutely not.  I'm not as close to the Cape as you are (in terms of distance
and skaters I know there), so information I'm getting has been patchy.  I'm not
surprised they're resentful, but I'm also not surprised that their students
have been leaving them left right and sideways.  Elite skaters have been
leaving the Scotvolds for a long time - I'm surprised that Wylie and Kerrigan
stayed as long as they did, the latter in particular.  Same with Jeff
DiGregorio.

IIRC, Nancy Kerrigan had a scholarship to a good college in Boston.  When
Paul Wylie left amateur skating, they told her they were moving to the
Cape and if she wanted to stay with them, she'd have to go to Cape Cod
Community College.  It was, apparently, a tough choice for her.  There was
a fair amount of local anger.  (I grew up about 20 minutes from NK's
hometown.)

I think Stacy Pengsen has been with him for quite a while.
