In reply to a question about why men's tights were banned in national
and international competition, it was deliberately done to annoy me
personally.

Ah, just aother person who thinks the world revolves around them.

I myself have it on reliable authority - I was talking to this guy from
the ISU last night - of course he didn't want me to mention his name, so
you'll have to trust me on this - that it was done specifically to***ME
off! So there.

There was also some concern that the use of tights was another aspect of a
Russian '***' to control skating. The judges were so blinded by the
sight of Russian men in tight tights that no other skaters had a chance at
winning.

A more likely suspect is Alexei Urmanov and his infamous sheer white
tights at Skate America '93. (The next time he was seen on North
American TV, he was wearing opaque *black* ones.)

I've always heard it was Sasha Zhulin.  Maybe that was just for Ice Dancing.

You know, I'm in Dallas, and I didn't even know Skate America was here until it
was over. I *knew* there had to be more reason to wish to time-travel back to
that event than Tonya Harding's dress, Oksana Baiul and Michelle Kwan. Did
these tights make it to TV?

Dear Peg; they sure did!! The copy I have of Alexei's SA program I think is
ABC broadcast (Button commentating) -- apparently the see-thru aspect of these
aforementioned tights came across better in person than on television.
According to my highly scientific rewind/play/rewind/pause/rewind/etc. VCR
experiments, the tights actually come across as more opaque on TV (honest).

I shall take my sick and depraved self back to lurkdom now ...

Skate America is an early season international hosted by the USA...a
member of the Grand Prix/Champions Series since the latter was started.

Trust me - if the statement is about a hot man looking good in tights,
it's got to be about a Russian!

Michalle, you are such good value!  That comment about Russian hunks in tights
made me smile!  You have good taste in men!

Well, he did wear them again, at '93 NHK.  Sounds like they went
over *real* well in Dallas, though.  ;^)

Well, as it turns out, I myself have this infamous Skate America program
on tape. I had thought this particular tape's 'raison d'etre' so to speak
was to provide me with Alexei shirtless, with towel around his waist, in a
practice room, but apparently it serves more than one purpose.
Astonishingly, I have clearly under-watched this tape given my lack of
memory that this program was on it, so I'm going to rectify this, watch it
about a hundred times tonight, and come back with my 'opaqueness'
score. Sure, Vashty's given her opinion, but really - on this topic, I
think one perspective is hardly enough. Given the importance of this
program with regard to potential establishment of a rule to which many
fine minds have profound philosophical objections, I think another
examination of just how opaque or non-opaque these tights are is clearly
in order.
I'll let you know!

All you women complaining about the sexist thread in comparing female skaters
better not throw stones again.  "Opaque vs non-opaque" indeed
