Not To Be Critical, But How The Hell Did Weiss Win The US National Title?

IMHO, he was awful.  I never thought he was a good skater.  I know
there are people out there who love him, but why.  Maybe I am missing
something.  We all have our faves and not-so-faves, but when was the
last time Weiss skated clean?  I just about every competition I have
seen him in over the years, he has consistently two-footed quads, fell
out of easy triple jumps, and just basically clunk around on the ice.

I await my beating....

I agree...I've never understood him, but to be honest, he was the best
*that* night. But I personally, don't agree that he adequately represents
the "best" of american men's skating, but he will be at worlds and we have
to accept it.

Look at the bright side.  He is going to Worlds.  In his own
backyard.  If he hadn't made the world team, he might have
decided to stay amateur another year.  Here's hoping for
a great (or decent) performance at Worlds so he will retire
from eligible competition, with nothing left to prove!!!

I like what I see inbetween the jumps, he has a lot of style. His edging is
clean, his lines are nice....there's a lot to like about Mike.

Weiss was the best of an awful bunch. Who would you place above him? Tim?
Johnny Weir? Matt? You don't take away somebody's championships because his
performance was below world standards. You don't say "ok, you guys stunk up the
ice, so there isn't going to be a gold medal awarded".

As for him not being a good skater. It's just not true. He doesn't have a
consistent quad. Or shall I say "doesn't have a quad"? But generally, he is a
decent jumper, solid spinner, can handle complex foot work, and has good edges.
His choreo is sometimes pretentious, but it's also more involved than what many
of his competitors can offer. His moves are usually have a nice finish to them
(all jokes about "finishing" a 3-axl on his knees aside), and he has good
posture, and good leg stretch. Mike isn't the most popular person around here,
but you can do much worse than him as far as skating is concerned.

I don't love him, but he does bring a lot more to the ice than jumps.

I don't think you'll be getting any beatings here. It was not a
fantastic skate -- understatement of the year But did you watch everyone
else in the long program? Deplorable as Weiss was, his skate was the
best of the night. Which is scary, but there ya have it.

Everyone else skated worse, or didn't finish.

Agreed. Brian Boitano was disappointed with the mens skating as well .

That's simply not true. Technically, he is one of the best skaters
around. His jump technique, except for axel, is very good. His spins
are great. His lutz is text book - correct deep flowing edges
including the take-off and landing. Just compare his lutz with
Yagudin's, for example - Yagudin basically flutzes his lutz right at
the take-off. And I don't even mention "chronic flutzers" like Goebel
or Honda.

True, he is not the most *stunning* skater but you shouldn't overlook
his best sides.

Speaking of Brian Boitano.  I seriously think Brian would have won this year's
Nationals with a clean skate.  It's not like he would have needed a Triple Axel
or a Quad......

He was jealous because he can't skate as well as the US men anymore. That's so
sad.
