The Sault Star (Monday, Jan. 18/99) featured an article (plus
picture) on Angela Derochie's fund-raising visit this past weekend.
Although she was a no-show at the hockey game Friday night, all
fund-raising functions ran as planned.
In an interview with Sault Star's Bill Montague Ms. Derochie
offered an explanation as to why recent Canadian women have had poor
showings internationally.  She attributes it to the wholesale
retirement in 1994 of good Cdn. female skaters  with international
experience .  According to Ms. Derochie, when this happened none of
the skaters being groomed were yet ready to step up.
Ms. Derochie (who is 25 yrs. old) is also quoted as saying she
would like to try to make it to the next Olympics and figures it's a
possibility if she stays healthy.  She was asked about Katarina Witt's
recent Playboy feature and commented that it may have proved good for
skating by "bringing a lot of males into it" (whether as skaters or
watchers she didn't specify).

A predictably stupid statement from a predictably stupid figure skater.
 What else is new?  ;-)
