Louis -

Thanks for the placements, and especially for the nice format that lets
me compare the judges marks so easily.

Now that some kind folks have explained the "lowest majority" concept,
I'm wondering why newspapers (and other sources) continue to show
factored placements along with the final standings rather than (the
seemingly more useful) "lowest majority".

Seeing
 1. Michelle Kwan 9/1
 2. Tara Lipinski 8/2
 3. Nicole Bobek 9/3

gives a much better sense of the "strength" of the placements than does
factored placements. Since John Q. Public isn't likely to understand
either method, why not give Jane Semi-Educated Public the more useful
infomation?

Yes,that's how I'd do it at a newspaper...the NY Times typically gives
skating results "1 Susie Skater,0.5 factored placements.
                 2.Sally Secondplace,1.0.
                 3.Trixie Thirdplace,1.5..."
when of course the number after the name merely indicates the
placement and is invariant within a program.

I would have an opening explanation and then continue with
established notation,viz:
                1.Susie Skater,majority of 8 judges for 2nd or better,
        0.5 factored placements.
                2.Sally Secondplace,9/3rd,1.0.
                3.Trixie Thirdplace,5/3,1.5
and so on.

Because Eddie E. Editor of Sports likes the "points" more than the fractions?
