Why didn't Tiffany Chin Skate in 1988 Winter Olympics?

You know what, I also wonder why Tiffany Chin didn't skate in 1988 in
Calgary? What was the reason?  Was she injured?

Thanks.

She wasn't eligible in 1988. She turned pro after the 1987? US
champioships, where she placed fourth (IIRC).

Why didn't she stick it out and go for it in 1988 and not turn pro in 1987?
Why couldn't she have waited 1 more year and then turn pro after the
Olympics in 1988?  I don't understand.

Well....  Chin was really at her technical peak as a skater in 1984.
She beat Rosalynn Sumners in both the short and long programs at
Nationals that year even though her figures placement kept her in
second overall.  At the 1984 Olympics she had been 2nd in the short
and 3rd in the long, and again only a poor figures placement kept her
off the podium.  But by 1987, the puberty monster had been at work and
Chin was losing her triples, and on top of that she just didn't look
at all happy with skating any more.  In 1987, Thomas and Kadavy were
world medalists and Trenary was national champion, while Chin was off
the world team, and it was looking like she had nowhere to go in 1988
anyway.  Remember that back in those days, there was still the strict
amateur/professional distinction, and it was hard to justify spending
the money to keep competing year after year just for the heck of
it....

Possible reasons:

1. She was burned out.

2. There were 3 tough competitors ahead of in '87 and she could see the were
not going away for '88, so it was going to be even tougher in an Olympic year.
IE, no reasonable prospect to get to the Olympics.

3. Her skating career was not in an upward spiral,  Nationals- '95-first
'96-second, '97-fourth.

4. She never really recovered from her muscle problems which affected her
skating after '85.  In '87 she had problems with her jumps IIRC at Nationals.

5. Her mother's pressure was suffocating.

I'm sure there's  many more possible and plausible reasons.

Yes, it was her decision.  But in my view, I think she should have went for
it in 1988.  If she worked hard enough, I think she could have beaten the
top skaters.  She may have had to work harder, but I think with her talent
that she could have done it.  She would have had to peak at the right time
in 1988 to succeed.  But I think she could have done that.

But it's her decision.  She has to lead her own life.

Peace.

I will never forget that tv interview Tiffany had with her Mother yelling and
putting her down off camera . The poor reporter was so embarassed.

I remember that!  The CBS Worlds '86 telecast, right?  Tiffany was
being interviewed in her living room, and her mother, who was sitting
JUST off-camera watching, heard Tiffany say something that set her
off.  Mrs. Chin got up, told the cameraman to stop, and then got in
Tiffany's face in front of the whole camera crew she berated poor
Tiffany for 10 minutes!

Has anyone ever heard Tiffany talk about her mother and what she feels about
her?   Did she say she resented her mother or didn't really care?  You know
what, possibly this is the way her family is and it's normal for her and she
has no problems with it.  What are her true views on this?
Enough of what we think, it's up to the way Tiffany thinks.

Well as a matter of fact, I was a Tiffany fan, and I got over my disappointment
years ago. :-)  It can be done.

People are reporting that she was upbraided and criticized by her mother
publicly before a filming camera crew.
Why do you have a problem with that?

Whether  Tiffany felt she was being publicly humiliated we don't know.  IMHO
Common sense would dictate that MOST people wouldn't want to be berated and
criticized before a film crew.

BTW, children who are abused physically may think it's "normal for them and
have no problems with it".  Yes, I know it's not a straight comparison with
Tiffany's case, but it does point out that whether somone is being mistreated
isn't contingent upon the subject recognizing they are being mistreated.

IIRC, in one interview Mama Chin (was it with Peggy Fleming) said that Tiffany
wasn't ill or injured, just lazy.  And Peggy Fleming seemed embarassed by the
whole incident.

To each his own, right?  Anyway, I was just asking a question.  No need to
get sarcastic.
