Why isn't ABC showing Worlds live?

Post by JSST » Thu, 28 Dec 2000 05:12:52

Throughout the Grand Prix Series it dawned on me several times that ABC treats
Worlds like just another figure skating competition.  Parts of Skate America
made it on the air quicker than any portion of the men, pairs and dance
competitions from Worlds will.  I can fully understand taped coverage of the
Grand Prix Series, but Worlds? I think its ridiculous. I dont want to
hear Terry Gannon brag about the networks wonderful coverage.  How are all
of the hours of coverage worth it in the long run when we see little coverage
of Worlds?

I know the reason ABC doesnt show pairs, dance and men live: they cant
devote four nights of primetime to figure skating.  Pairs and dance especially
will not attract the desired rating for primetime.  I still think the men are
popular enough to show on a Thursday night on ABC, instead of the zillionth
Millionaire episode.

So my suggestion is, if ABC cant show the free skates live (and hence, have
to tape delay the event by a few days to show it on the weekend) why cant
ESPN, ESPN2 or LIFETIME show the pairs, dance and mens free skates live?
Then ABC could repeat the top performances the Sunday afternoon they are
scheduled to show skating.  Why not give fans with cable a chance to see the
World Championship live?  Then the fans without cable could see the free skates
on ABC.

I also think more days should be devoted to Worlds. Instead of packaging Worlds
to look like a four day event, why not go on the air Monday  through Sunday and
broadcast the whole competition in its entirety?  Wimbledon and US Open command
two weeks of daily coverage that usually is about 6 hours a day.  Skating is
more popular than tennis, yet you wouldnt know it.

I think ABC should really devote more hours and live coverage to Worlds.

ITA. It is really an unfair tease to show us skaters during the GP series and
then only show us the top six (plus Americans) at Worlds.

Nice idea, except that the Thursday episode of Millionaire is one of the
highest rated shows on TV. Look at the weekly ratings: the reason there are so
many episodes of Millionaire is that each one is in the top ten or 15 almost
every week.

Friday night, on the other hand, is generally a night of very low ratings. They
could show three hours of worlds then and probably draw decent ratings.

Sounds good to me! I know their philosophy is that they don't want to show
anything on ABC that has already been seen on cable, but I think they need to
realize that those are two different audiences (hard core vs. casual fans) and
do exactly what you said: broader coverage on cable and then "highlights" on
ABC.

Well, the average skating fan thinks so,but the average USA TV exec
doesn't.Sounds like you're suggesting they do what Canadian TV usually
does!!

ABC could farm out part of Worlds (most likely the first two parts of
the ice dance competition) to the Lifetime network for a Friday night
extravaganza. Four hours of coverage should be about enough time for
them to show all of the performances by the American Ice Dancers, with
plenty of room for backstage fotoz of various glum looking skate
couples. As far as ESPN2, I can't see them cutting away from tractor
pulls to show live skating.

All two of them? How many teams can we send, anyway?

I dunno. ESPN2 seems to show a lot of skating reruns, why not live?
Actually, I think the reason they wouldn't show it live on ESPN2 is
that it's considered too "marquee" a sport to be debuted on a third-
level network -- kind of the way that Skate America is so prestigious
that we actually get less coverage because they want to show it all on
the premium network (ABC) not cable.

Why isn't ABC showing Worlds live?

Perhaps somebody has pointed this out already, but I recall vividly watching
the 1996 Worlds Mens final live from Canada.  (I've forgotten what city). I
just remember that I was rooting so hard for Galindo to get a medal and was so
damn nervous that I was cursing ABC that they were carrying it live.

Perhaps 1996 was still close enough to Tania/Nancy that ABC thought it was
worth it.

What kind of contract does Canadian TV have with the ISU, do you know?

That'll be me at this year's Nationals, with all the pessimism about my
favorite skater (read Michelle Kwan), I doubt I will have any nails left after
the broadcast of the Ladies event!

It's love hate with me as far as live broadcasts go.  I'm certainly glad I was
spoiled for the Nagano outcome.

I prefer to know the results beforehand so I can just enjoy the skating without
worrying about the outcome. Since prime time is usually delayed an hour here in
the Rocky Mountain time zone before we are shown it "live", I can check the
results before tuning in.
