Uh, Shelly, where have you been? They haven't been skating for
months and it's already been discussed to death. Jamie is "not well",
and can no longer skate. I believe her weight was the reason behind it.

I guess I haven't been on for a while either. This is a surprise to me. I
really enjoyed their routines and was looking forward to watching them again
this season. If it isn't too big of a deal to repeat some of the
information that I (and others) missed, could we get a brief update?

I've been following the threads and keeping silent. Nobody
knew nothing. It was all speculation, including my own that
they had had a 'little problem'. What I suspect is that the
judges have been so unfair to them because of their age,
that they simply had no alternative. I truly believe that,
and will not turn from it. I saw the looks on their faces
all last year when they would clearly win events, but
their scores would go 5.3s on average. I was hoping to see
them again .. my video capture card is ready .. so that
I could really raise hell with those judges, and document
the farce. Too bad. Those judges cost us the best dance
pair this country has ever known. To me, all the rest of
them, especially the French couple, look like something
out of a Hammer Film. They really suck.

Those of us who've been here consistently don't know much more than you do. At
this time, they are not skating. Something evidently happened, but we're not
sure what. We don't know if they're coming back, and if they do come back, we
don't know when. To my knowledge, there's been no official announcement of a
break-up or that anyone is quitting. We're all sort of waiting for a credible
source to bring us news of any sort.

So you really think a skating couple would break up because of unfair
alleged judging "because of their age" when they'd barely begun on the
international scene? Please. You appear to know little about gymnastics,
sir, and even less about skating, PicFrames and all.

So are they out for *this* year only, or did they break up
permanently? I have been hearing conflicting stories about this.

John is full of it again. Silverstein & Pekarek did not stay out this year
because of Judging. They never said they had a problem with their placements.

much of an Ice Dance fan except when it comes to the 'exceptional'
teams like Torvil/Dean, Klimova/Ponemarenko etc. and Jaime/Justin were
right there for me - I enjoyed watching them skate immensely-much more
so than Lang/Cher. I hope it's not a weight issue but actually looking
at both Jamie and Naomi Lang they both look extremely underweight- much
like Renee Roca did. I wonder why the desire to be so terribly thin
seems more prevalent amongst the female ice dancers than the female
pair skaters?

It's partially a "fashion thing". It is considered to be ABSOLUTELY
MANDATORY in ice dance that the lady have long, long, lean legs. If she
isn't naturally gifted in this direction, she can either 1) skate as she
is and take the lower marks that are certain to come (especially in the
compulsories), or 2) diet drastically in the hope of making her legs
*look* longer by reducing the size of the rest of her. Many who don't
*need* to diet do so in the hope of improving their "line" and therefore
the team's overall standings.

Long lean legs have been MANDATORY since the early 1990's. It did not
escape my attention that at the 1994 Winter Olympics only *one* couple
(that we saw) did not have this long lean attenuated-greyhound look:
Torvill & Dean, who had not competed as eligibles in a full decade. I
absolutely think that *was* one of the factors working against them, and
am certain that they had to work twice as hard as the others to be seen
as half as good. (They must have worked *more* than twice as hard, since
they did wind up with a bronze medal, after all.)

At the 1998 Olympics there were *NO* exceptions (that we saw) to the
"greyhound look".

I don't know if this is true or not. But if it is, perhaps it's because
ice dancers
feel they have less control over where they're placed by the judges. It
isn't
like pairs skating, where you can clearly hit or miss your elements.

But I have a feeling this thought is only going to lead back to a
discussion
of problems in ice dance judging...

In my opinion, pairs skating is freestyle, and freestyle skaters (in
general, not all) have a lot more leeway to be muscular than dancers. Ice
dance draws more from, well, dance, and traditionally dancers are very thin
individuals. The other disciplines tend to emphasize the athletic aspect
more, and it's acceptable for athletes to be muscular. That might be a
reason that you see more extremely thin skaters in ice dance.
Of course, there's also the fact that in dance your partner might not be
more than a few inches taller and that's an added pressure to be thin and
increase the weight difference. I had a partner one time that was exactly
my height, which made for incredible unison but I had to stay at a very low
body weight to make the lifts easier. This isn't the case with all teams
but it's something to think about.

I had just been thinking how ironic it is that the dance team held up by
so many as the greatest ever actually had a woman whose legs were
comparatively short and stubby, held up to those of so many other female
ice dancers.
