Why didn't Nicole skate in the exhibiition?

Post by BH88 » Mon, 12 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Doesn't the third place finisher get to skate?  Tonia certainly deserved to,
but why didn't Nicole skate?  What is going on?

Traditionally at nationals, the novice and junior champions skate, then the top
three in each discipline of the senior division.  Anybody know what's up?

I thought it was strange too, but perhaps a nice gesture to
Tonia for her final performance as an amateur - thought about that
while on the train returning to VA

I didn't think that Nicole not skating had anything to do with Tonia skating;
The Steiglers, who were also fourth, skated as well.  I was really puzzled,
especially since Nicole was there for the finale.  Surely, they could have cut
the 2nd program from  either I&D or P&S and given us Nicole instead.

My theory- which is probably completely wrong- was that Nicole felt emotionally
drained from her competitions.  That doesn't seem likely since she seems to
enjoy performing, but I can't think of any other explanation that makes any
sense to me.

Firstly, they invited the Olympic alternates to skate, which is Tonia
Kwiatkowski and the Stieglettes (of the nonmedalists).

Nicole *did* do the skate around, so she obviously wasn't injured. Guess she
just didn't want to!

How could the "Stieglets"(if Stephanie's injury is really career-ending,
perhaps we'd better start thinking of them as THE Stieglers) be alternates
to a team for which they are not eligible?I'd expect L&W and the Hartsells
to be the alternates,if there is room for a third alternate to a two-entry
team, the next team allowed to compete is Handy & Binnebose,as Laura was
old enough last July 1 while Tiffany S. and Natalie Vlandis weren't.

I saw two different news reports on this.  One said that she'd been so
busy preparing her competition programs that she hadn't practiced an
exhibition.  The other said that she was "sore" from the previous night.
You choose.

Pretty annoying, too, considering how expensive those tickets
were.  It is pretty unlikely I'll ever pay for another exhibition
until whoever sets the prices realizes that $75 (we actually paid
$50 in mid 1995) is pretty high.  OTOH, the building was fairly
full.

I think the Stieglers were there because Todd and Jenni weren't

the Stieglers are not the Alternates - I would presume that position goes
to Shelby and Brian

Nicole does apparently have a nagging hip injury, Emma.  She just decided
not to skate her ex program since it was not required.  Considering how well she
skated this time, I don't we should worry if Nicole decides to not skate in
something unimportant.

I was told on the bus ride to the airport after the exhibition by the
Novice Pairs team and their parents (who were in the exhibition) that
Nicole did not skate because she hurt her leg in the practice session???
I too found it odd since there was much publicity in the papers that
morning talking about how Nicole was going to improv a program as a
tribute to Carlo.  Also, Nicole was seen the night before around 3 am
partying pretty hard??  Who knows the real reason?

There was an exhibition practice session early on Sunday morning she could have
injured herself then.

She has also been quoted as saying she was very sore and didn't feel up to
performing.
SHe could be injured.  I was near the skaters entrance in the arena and at the
end I saw her kind of limping.  And she said ouch.   I don't know if I'm
jumping to conclusions or what.  Chances are she probably just pulled
something.  She was practicing so hard all week it is not unlikely to have
hapenned.
