REALLY original music for skater

Post by Probativ » Wed, 16 Dec 1998 04:00:00

This board needs something to lighten things up.

Anyway, we all talk about how sick we are of Malaguenia, WSS, etc.  To
commemorate the openning of Star Trek: Insurrection, I propose that we dare a
skater to skate to music from Star Trek!  I honestly think it would be a
hilarious program!  I'm trying to envision which skater would do well with such
music. I guess maybe Kurt...nah.   Anyone has any ideas?  Heck, Michelle makes
it a rule to skate to music that no one else has skated to, I wonder what she
would do if given music from Start Trek.  This sure is one that no other skater
has touched.  While we're at it, someone should skate to music from the X Files
too.

If you have ever sat through a competition featuring little boy skaters
(e.g. pre-prelim and prelim), trust me, you have seen people skate to Star
Trek. Yeech. That and Men in Black both need to be put on the "banned"
list.

Cheers, Fiona

Actually, use of the music is quite common amongst the younger set, and
usually with dissappointing results. I happen to think that a good program
could be constructed using the theme music from the Next Generations series
of movies,  the Voyager TV series, and The Undiscovered Country movie.

Meno and Sand *need* to do something from XFiles! And it would be a great
change of pace for them. They have the perfect looks for it.

I saw Ginger & Archie Tse do an entire "outer space" novelty pairs number
using music from various science fiction sources, including Trek.

I remember that. I still even have the thing on tape. I saw it at a
Skating Spectacular I think. Come to think of it, I think they had the
thing in Rochester.

I actually considered that for my short program for this coming season.
There's actually some good music on the CD from the televison show.  Happily,
however, I chose something else.

The Theme Music from DS9 is great; no words and they redid it a couple of years
back so it sounds like a real orchestra.....only I don't think its long
enough...anyone know?

They added a steady beat to try to give it "punch", the way ice dancers added
percussion to non-obvious-beat-containing music in previous seasons. It was a
theme that was aimless and pointless before, and it's aimless and pointless
with a beat now.

.....only I don't think its long

I don't know how long the DS9 title music is. I *do* know it would take an
extraordinary skater to make that ponderous piece of bilge an interesting
program <shudder>. IMHBWO, of course.

Also IMO: The original mix of Next Generation theme was really weak, too, but
the later revision was excellent, as the accompaniment was enhanced
significantly. The title theme to Voyager was always a fine piece of music, and
I think it's a good tempo for skating... but I can't see anyone with a name
using it.

I don't know why but the theme to voyager always rubbed me the wrong
way...maybe because I can't stand the show; I like the theme to DS9 but maybe
its because  I like DS9 so much

do you mean newer stuff that isn't played on the radio? Or do you mean more
obscure stuff that isn't played on the radio? Because stuff like tonight
tonight was played all the time when it first came out

no i mean like songs that werent played on the radio period. like i think the
song lily (my one and only) would make a cute program for a dance team.

We must really be on the same wavelength.  That is exactly what I think too -
about the shows, about the music, about everything.  I was going to reply to
your original post, but now I'll answer this instead.

The DS-9 theme I always thought was kind of grand sounding and all the
climaxes in the music are perfect for a highlight move of some sort.  I
actually liked the original version a bit better than the re-mix - it was a
bit slower and I thought created a mood better.  I think this music however
would work better for a couple than for single skaters though.  I think you
need two people to really make use the music effectively and make it
interesting to watch.
