The latest issue of Blades on Ice talks about Natalia's plan to
return to the ice. Natalia is working with boyfriend Craig
Shepherd (a former hockey star) to compete in ISU eligible
events. They will be competing in the up coming season. Shepherd
skated for the Club Dynamo in Moscow for 2 years and
also played NCAA hockey and skated for Sweden. He trained with
Pieter Kollen. The article states that Natalia and Craig have
contacted some top coaches to further their on-ice training.
Calla Urbanski and her husband Jay Freeman are expecting
their first child this September. Urbanski and Marval will
perform till May.
Alexandr Zhulin has moved to Simsbury, CT. Maia is still in
Lake Placid. Zhulin commutes to Lake Placid to train with
Dubova.

Thank you for the update! Is the guy Natalia training with the same one
showed in the segment about her at the centennial? Also is she actually
going to pairs skate again? I kind of missed that in your message.
Thanxs again!

Um, isn't it more than a bit risky for Calla to be skating while
pregnant? Or did you mean to write that U&M will NOT perform till May (1997)?

Just wondering,

Hmm, a female pairs skater who had a rocky relationship with her
last partner and a former hockey player, skating pairs, a romance between
them . . . are they working on the Pamchenko?;)
Seriously, thanks for the info!  It's nice to hear about Natalia
again:)

They've still been skating.  I understand that Calla & Rocky recently
competed at Miko Masters in Paris.  She has been receiving prenatal care
and has apparently worked out a plan for her skating that is acceptable to
her doctor.

I assume "don't fall" was part of the plan?

My coach was on the ice with the skaters until about 2 or 3 weeks before
she delivered, but she wasn't doing Detroiters.:-)

Now would that be the Calla we all know and love??  ;-)  Last I heard
they have not watered down their programs, and she has been doing throw
triple loops in practices.  Sounds to me like an all-or-nothing plan for
the skating.

Calla will be performing at least through May 19th as she and Rocky are
scheduled to appear at the Babson Skating Club's Spring Exhibition to
benefit Pediatric Aids at the Children's Hospital in Boston.  Elaine
Zayak, Shepherd Clark, Blades of Gold and other top New England talent
will be appearing.  Contact me if interested in ticket info.

I've heard of several skaters continuing to skate while pregnant.  I know
I talked to someone (forgot who) that said they saw Peggy Fleming skate
when she was 6 mos pregnant.  And didn't Katya perform while pregnant with
Daria?

Anyway, contrary to popular belief most falls will not result in
miscarriage.  Especially in the first trimester.  My friend went to Cedar
Point (amu***t park) while pregnant with her last child and the doctor
told her to go on any ride she pleased since there was no way it would
cause her to miscarry.  Later on in pregnancy a fall is more dangerous
since it can cause the membranes that hold the amniotic fluid in to break.
That can be a mess as well as cause premature labor.
