Vienna Cup? Can someone please explain?

Post by Cass39 » Wed, 26 Mar 1997 04:00:00

After reading all the articles about Susan and Lulu both
have a last chance if they compete in Vienna Cup in
October.  Since this is the first time I heard of
this, can someone kind enough to explain exactly how
this competition works?   I heard both Lulu and Susan
have to finish the top six in order to qualify for
the Olympics.  So, what are their chances?  What nations
do we expect to show up there? What other
skaters do we expect to see in Vienna Cup?  How
many skaters totally do we expect to see there?

Final standings from last year's Vienna Cup are duplicated below.  As you can see, it is pretty well attended albeit at a level below the "Grand Prix" events.  The competition is actually not always well run (in terms of organization, logistics, and the like), but has the decided benefit of being in Vienna (duh).  It has been used for ISU-related activities on several occasions, perhaps because of the location.  I believe it was the venue last year for the ISU judging seminars, etc. which were unrelated to the competition itself but occuring at the same time.
