OK, and I know that's the name of the river and you are in Philadelphia,
where I hope to be visiting for the first time later this year. But my
embarrassment will totally mortifying if when I get there, despite the fact
that I attended the same school as William Penn (he was a year or two older
than me), I still don't have a clue on how to pronounce "Schuylkill".

Who out there in newsgroupland would like to enlighten me?

Those of us from Fluffya say something like Skoo-k'l.  But my
pronunciation of place names (and the word "water") gives away where I was
born and grew up.  I guess it is supposed to be pronounced (in English,
that is) something more like School-kill, and I have indeed heard it
pronounced that way by non-Fluffyans.

And the highway that runs near the river is known as the Sure Kill
Expressway.

I'd describe it as "skoo-kel" with emphasis on the first syllable.

Skool-kill is Philadephia pronunciation; there are probably some Dutch
pure***s who would pronounce it Skoo-eel-kill (same way that Zuidema is
pronounced not
Zoo-dema, but Zu-ii-dema).

And just what did happen to the Princeton LWT's at the IRA's???
