UREGENT UK: Four's Head Cancelled

Post by Trevor Chamber » Fri, 03 Nov 2000 20:41:05

Hi all,

Rachel Q has just asked me to update the <a
href="http://users.ox.ac.uk/~quarrell/new.html">Rowing Service</a> and
rsr to the effect that this weekend's Four's Head has been cancelled
because of the water conditions. It's been raining all night upstream
and it was felt that a safe event was impossible.

Presumably (!) this applies to Sunday's Vets Head too....

The Four's Head <a
href="http://www.headoftheriverfours.co.uk/">website</a> will presumably
be updated shortly with details of whether it will be re-run at a later
date or whether entries will be refunded etc...

Just a little annoyed that over the last few days I've abstained from
indulging at one***tail party and two formal dinners with the aim
of having a clear head for this weekend.  Oh well - drinks round mine
tonight anyone?!

Or a lot people merely relieved.

It was a brave decision for the committee to take, but the state of the
Tideway over the last week has left them little option. I've not seen
stream as strong in the 8 years I've been rowing on it.

Some people will have wanted to row come hell or high water. We've
certainly got the latter and 500+ crews, many less than experienced in
Tideway conditions (which can be problematic to the unwary on calm days)
would have been a recipe for the former ...

The only real shame about losing the opportunity to race in these
conditions is to set some records which would have been hard to break!
The top boats will have been knocking on the door of 15 minutes ...

Spare a thought for the poor folks at Rock the Boat - that was a
terrific tee-shirt design they came up with (link on today's RS news).

I'm tempted to get one anyway, for the rarity/curiosity value.  Got as
much right to wear it as anybody else.

Yes I'm sure they will have some collector value
in years to come, along with Head of The Charles
1996 T-shirts.

and Belgain canals may not flood, but they have
one large drawback.... they're in Belgium
