Hard times at Leander?

I happend to see the Leander 'Boat Fund' shop at HRR today, full of pink
hippos and other whimsical gifts. I didn't stop to see whether the fund
was for Leander itself but I assume it was.  I had also assumed that
Leander would have a fairly wealthy membership (excluding impoverished
fulltime squad members) and therfore keep a fleet together, doesn't our
ARA subscriptions go towards squad equipment?

I doubt that those would cover the costs! (There's also more to Leander
than just squad.)

I reckon that shop is just to pander to visiting Americans who want
hippo boxers :)

Hard times at Leander?

The ARA has always maintained that all squad equipment is bought through the
use of funds other than members subs - ie through the sports grants/lottery
etc.
Regarding Leander - it is precisely because they look after their competing
oarsmen (and also others who have trained using the Leander premises - I
count myself as one of the beneficiaries of the Leander generosity) through
heavy subsidies on the boat/kit/subscription/travel and food front that funds
are always needed.
However I also think quite alot has to do with Chris Harrisons comment.

Considering Leander recently admitted women on the basis that they'd get a
whacking lottery grant (nothing like a bit of money to get equality in
sport, eh?) I would say they're very well off. I assume they call it that
cos it would be a little silly to call it the 'Beer Slush Fund' or
some such thing.
I am NOT suggesting Leander collect money for the sole purpose of buying
beer, however, I just want to state that now before any lawyers read this.
The lottery grant may have been for entirely different purposes than
day-to-day running too.

The boat fund shop has always been full of pink hippos etc. The ARA doesn't
give Leander money for Leander crews, only for national squad crews. There
is a lot of development and coaching going on behind the scenes that most
people don't know about.
The extra money is to help extend the boathouse.
