Wanted: Heart rate monitor info (Oxford, UK)

Post by Stephen Prest » Sat, 10 Jun 1995 04:00:00

A few months ago in Regatta magazine an article was published comparing
heart rate monitors made by Polar and Cardiosport (I think).
Unfortunately, I've lost that particular copy of the magazine.

Can anyone out there tell me either the UK address of Cardiosport or of
a local supplier.

Can anyone tell me a bit about the Cardiosport range (how good/accurate
they are) or any similar device. I am interested in a chest strap type
with wireless transmission.

Or does anyone have a secondhand one they want to sell?

Hi Stephen,
I am a runner rather than rower but have used a Cardiosport Heartsafe T for both training and racing. My wife (Derby RC) has also used it on ergo sessions.
I can recommend them as excellent value for money, easy to maintain (can change your own transmitter battery, NOT something you can do on the POLARs) and lightweight. The Heartsafe T cost 85 or thereabouts and comes with a two year warranty. Best bets for purchase are running equipment suppliers (HRMs are big business with runners). I bought mine from the SWEATSHOP (Isleworth area 0181-758-0044) but other retailers include RUNNERS NEED in Camden (0171-267-4382) and BOURNE SPORTS (Stoke 01782-410411). Heartsafe is chestband with clip-on wireless transmitter and wris***ch receiver.
Best of luck

Stephen - I'm not sure about the cardiosports, but I got my Polar from
Touchwoods on St Aldates. They also have them at the Olympus in the
Westgate centre, but they're dearer there.

They are absolutely great for ergs, especially, and also head races. However,
I don't know about their use for "sprint" races (Ch Ch length, or a quick
bump).

Whatever  you get, you'll relly notice the improvement in your training.

Be sure to test the one you want before you buy it. I bought a
Cardiosport and couldn't get it to pick up reliably no matter what tension
on the strap or where it was placed (On my chest of course!) I swapped it
for a Polar which works fine. Maybe it depends on your type of sweat or
chest shape?????
