I don't know what exactly makes the difference, but I row since 1978 here on
the sea and I always feel the difference when I go to a rake, mostly on
lakes. It may well be that othere components then salinity are doing the
difference, or has more contribution, I can feel an height difference of
around 5-10mm, considering that a lift in the boat is reported to the
hand/body trough the leverage of the scull/oar.
At this point I think your calculation may be right (2 mm) but you should
then add other factors about water components, and I suspect a big factor is
the temperature, that is sometimes much higher on the suface of the sea then
on the surface of lakes.
