130th Dutch Varsity Regatta

On a busy shipping route (Amsterdam-Rhine Canal), kept clear for one
afternoon of student rowing. Final of the main event Oude Vier ("old
four" or varsity 4s) is with 7 crews on a 3 km stretch with a slight
bend in the first km. My club Triton Utrecht last won in 1967, was
second in 2005 and second again yesterday: http://youtu.be/n5ig-nZLgJU

Next year ...

[Remarkable: this regatta is the source of the Dutch
swimming-to-their-winning-team thing but no swimmers this year, for the
first time EVAH,  as the water was only 5 degrees C.]

And my own crappy video: http://youtu.be/xTYSVUAz2Bk (warming up,
aligning, start, finish, getting out)

Is the white flag start traditional in the Netherlands?

Yes, it means all rowers surrender to Okeanos the god of the seas.

P.S. This is not true

No. The rules say the starter's flag is red, optionally with a white
saltire (St Andrew's cross), ref. article 49a in KNRB R&R linked from
http://www.knrb.nl/content.php/nl/319  Good catch. Starter was Hans de
Haas, FISA umpire.

D'oh. Only checking now, but the flag was just that: red with a white
cross. Completely legal.

Is this photoshopped? I hope not, because C. Anton is seconds away from
writing to FISA to demand the whole thing be nullified and rescheduled
because of what will certainly be known as the flag-gate fiasco.

No it is as indicated now that I am using a larger screen.
