I just talked to a friend in the Red Sox's player personnel
department(he's not Duquette's right-hand man, but he recommended getting
Slobumb). He basically told me that Slocumb was an upgrade over Ken Ryan.
He will be the closer obviously. Initial offer was Slocumb for Ryan,
Murray and Tinsley. Red Sox wanted young pitching included. There first
choice was Wimberly. Even though he just turned 20, the Red Sox are
ecstatic about getting him. I asked him about Tinsley, and he said he was
expendable because of the depth of outfielders in their system. Murray was
a little harder to part with, but once again the outfield depth was there.
There initial intention was to play Cordero at 3rd, by trading
Naehring, with Alicea playing 2nd. The offers they received in return for
him were unimpressive.
They are close to signing Strawberry. He would probably be a
part-time DH. My friend was practically drooling about having Vaughn,
Stanley, Canseco, Strawberry batting in the same lineup.
He has recommended O'Leary sharing equal time with Greenwell in LF. He
said it probably won't happen.
Hosey and Alex Cole will platoon in CF.
They look for big things from Aaron Sele this season coming off his
That's about it. Thanks. Rob
