BYU REPORT: BYU vs. Utah  January 9, 1993

The University of Utah Utes came to Provo to meet the Cougars in a
showdown between what many people are saying are the two best teams in
the WAC. The game didn't disappoint those who like exciting
basketball.

This was a game of defense. Both offenses struggled throughout the
game. Utah shot 30% from the field. Josh Grant and Gary Trost, the
WAC's two best players, shot a combined 5 of 23. Nick Sanderson, BYU's
leading scorer, managed only six points. Utah made just 1 of 13
3-point shots. Defense was the name of the game.

Utah took a five point halftime lead at 28-23. The Utes stretched that
lead to 10 point at one point in the second half, but the Cougars came
back with a 3-pointers by Reid and Nixon. A two pointe by Nixon
finally gave the Cougars the lead at 51-50, capping a 14-5 run by the
Coogs.

From that point on, it was a matter of which team would score last.
Utah's Byron Wilson sank two free throws at the 2 minute mark to give
Utah the lead lead at 52-51. Jared Miller missed for BYU. Phil Dixon
missed a 3 for the Utes but Utah rebounded but was called for
travelling. BYU worked *** their offensive possession, and the Ute
defense worked just as hard. Nick Sanderson finally threw one up with
just 2 seconds on the shot clock and it went in giving the Coogs the
53-52 lead with 45 seconds left.

The Utes worked for the last shot of the game. Phil Dixon, the leading
scorer in the WAC, hit his first field goal of the game with just 3.3
seconds left to give the Utes the 1 point victory at 54-53. A
desperation 3 from half court by Sanderson was way off the mark to
seal the victory for the Utes.

One of the biggest factors in the game was the Utes out rebounding the
taller Cougars. The Utes something like 15 offensive rebounds. If the
Cougars had been more dominating on the boards, BYU would have won the
game since Utah shot only 30%.

This is the first game in a long time, maybe the first all year, where
BYU has had less turnovers than the opponent.
