                             BYU vs. UTEP
                           January 5, 1994

BYU continued their three game road trip at El Paso, Texas on
Wednesday night. While the Cougars have had a tough time winning at
New Mexico, UTEP has been much kinder to the Cougars over the years.
BYU has played even with the Miners on their home court with each team
winning 12 games. Most teams find UTEP a very tough place to play, but
BYU has done a pretty good job over the years of taking its share of
wins from Don Haskins' usually excellent teams.

This game was just about the opposite of Monday's BYU-New Mexico
game.  Against the Lobos, the Cougars couldn't buy a basket until the
end of the game when they got hot and made the game kind of
close. Against UTEP, it was the Miners who were cold all game long
until it was too late. The Miners shot a dismal 23% from the field in
the first half.  The Cougars jumped on top of the Miners by an early
score of 14-5 before the Miners went on a 12-1 run to take a lead at
17-16. The Cougars responded by outscoring the Miners 17-5 for the
remainder of the first half, led by sophomore forward Mark Durrant
who had 9 first-half points. The Cougars led at the break 33-22.

The first half of the game was incredibly long with a large number of
fouls and substitutions. Cougar guard Kurt Christensen went out of the
game in the first minute with a sprained ankle and did not return,
putting the pressure on freshman Robbie Reid to step in a play almost
a full game.

BYU maintained a double-digit lead through most of the second half
despite shooting poorly in the second half. The Cougars shot 48% from
the field in the first half, but finished the game with 38%
shooting. UTEP pulled to within 9 at the two-minute mark with a score
of 58-49. Two three-pointers in a row by Ralph Davis cut the Cougar
lead to a slim 5 points at 62-57 with a minute left to play.  Robbie
Reid responded with two free throws and a fast break basket to secure
the win for the Cougars with a final score of 67-59.

Mark Durrant had probably his best game as a Cougar, certainly his
best since he returned from his mission. Larson played a solid game,
but was in foul trouble early which cost him playing time. Robbie Reid
responded to the pressure after Christensen was injured and
contributed 15 points.

The win gave Roger Reid his 100th victory as the Cougar head coach.
Reid is in his 5th season as head coach. The Cougars needed this win
after the loss to New Mexico on Monday. If the Cougars can beat Utah
on Saturday, they will have done what they needed to do -- win 2-of-3
on this road trip.

NEXT GAME

BYU travels to Salt Lake City to play the Utes on Saturday night. One
schedule listed this game as being on ESPN, but I don't believe that
is true. It looks like this game will only be available on local TV.
