Red Sox, Reds, and Padre Trade rumor

Post by WEL.. » Thu, 24 Oct 1991 22:20:38

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer this morning, the Reds, Red Sox, and
Padres are discussing a three way deal. The Reds would send Scott Scudder
and Randy Myers to the Sox for Mike Greenwell and a minor leaguer (top
prospect, whose name I can't remember), the Reds would send the prospect
to the Padres for Bip Roberts. They didn't mention anyone else going to
the Padres.

It sounds like there must be something else to this trade.  As
given it is the Reds giving up two pitchers for two left-fielders.  Now,
they might want one good left fielders but they have no need for two.
BTW, why is everyone so down on Bip?  This year wasn't so good but 1990
showed what I consisder to be his true level.  With the lack of good third
ba*** in the NL today I'm supprised that the Padres aren't getting loads
of trade offers for him.

I think there are two main knocks on Bip, first, that he's not
durable enough to play everyday in the infield, and second,
that he's got a personality problem.  Apparently he is extremely
moody, to the extent of being manic-depressive, and Riddoch
for one wants him out of San Diego.

I think he's a fine player, not only because I have him
at $12 through 1993...

Judging from what players have universally said about Riddoch after they
left San Diego, I get the impression that Riddoch wants a lot of players
out of San Diego.

What is Riddoch's contract status?  I read somewhere that his contract
required that if he were fired as manager, he be kept on as a coach at the
major league level, which was given as the only reason McIlivaine didn't
dump him last year.  I don't get the impression that McIlivaine is
satisfied with Riddoch; how likely is Riddoch to survive through next year?

If Bipo has such high trade value as a 3B, how come you clame the Reds
are getting two LF's?  BTW, didn't BIp also log some time at 2B a couple
years ago?

Like the Reds need another 2B man?

Actually he played some second base for the last couple of years I
believe.  However, I'm not convinced his defense there is any good.

Basically I list him as a left fielder because that is what the
baseball people seem to think he is.  A little while ago aother netter (who
I have forgotten) said the Bip is not durable enough to play the infield
regularly.  However, if this isn't the case I definitely feel the he is
being misused in the outfield.
Of course the Reds allready have Sabo and Duncan so the infield
spots are full.  Thus, if he is on the Reds I can't see him playing much
other then LF.

The Reds have Sabo at third but Duncan has declared himself as a free agent.
I don't believe he will return so that leaves the Reds with Doran at second,
and with his back he is questionable so Bip probalbly would be a good pickup.

to see him with the Reds next year. He wants a guarantee of a starting
position and with Doran (and his contract) and the money that Duncan will
be able to demand, he won't get the guarantee and they're not going to pay
someone that much to sit on the bench.

I apologize to all of the Reds fans for sticking them with Duncan.
I knew he had filed and I meant to write Doran.  Anyone want a slightly
uncooperative pair of hands?

BTW, what is the status with Morris?  Has there been any word about
whether he will start versus lefties in the comming year?
