I am a BIG Yankee fan. Started in the early '60s, when they were winning
pennants every year. Stayed with them through all those lean years.
Screamed with delight (i have it on tape) when Chris Chambliss hit the
homer that put them into the '76 World Series. Cheered Reggie's 3 big ones
in last game of '77 Series... Then, after 81, started losing interest...
Steinbrenner was wrecking the club with his Manager-of-the-month system...
Then, Buck Showalter came along. Tough. Smart. No Nonsense. The way
managers used to be. The club started winning again.
Now, even though I identify with the coaches more than the players (Willie
Randolph COACHING THIRD? O, lost youth!) I really love this team, and I am
TICKED OFF that a strike's gonna wreck it all.
And you?

Looking for Yanks fans? You've got a big one here. If Key doesn't get AL
MVP (don't forget Frank Thomas), Cone is his only Cy Young competition
and Jimmy's team's record should earn him the Cy award. Buck Showalter is
vastly underrated as a manager. This is probably because he is so quiet
and just goes about his job with class (aside from Griffey thing, that
was uncalled for). Boggs is hitting great and being all but ignored. Paul
O'Neill is underrated defensively. Perez has blossomed into a solid #2
starter (think the White Sox are hating the Steve Sax deal about now?).
The bullpen has improved and Steve Howe is closing solidly. Only a strike
can keep the Yanks from the Series (Well, maybe aside from the ChiSox,
who have a knack for beating us) Yanks in 94!!!!!!!!!

Huh?  Key isn't even the best pitcher in the league, so how can he possibly be
the best *player*?

What is this ***about Key and the Cy Young?  Key is a great pitcher, has
been a great pitcher, and is pitching great this year.

But he's nowhere *near* Cy Young.

Cone, Clemens, Mussina, Hentgen have all pitched better than Key.
(Okay, that's not *far.*  But people keep pretending it's a two person race.)

Cone and Clemens have pitched *much* better than Key.
Cone, Clemens, and Mussina have all pitched more innings than Key.

The fact that Key plays for a better team is irrelevant; we're not evaluating
Key's teammates, we're evaluating Key.

I think they've been hating it for several years, now.
About the only mitigating circumstance from the ChiSox point of view is that
they still have an excellent pitching staff, even after the deal.  It ain't
much consolation, though.  They could have traded these guys for something
they could use, like a shortstop who can hit, or something, had they not done
the Sax deal.

Boy, did Sax's career drive off a cliff...

I was once a Yankee fan -- my first visit to Yankee Stadium was in 1953.
One reason that I no longer root for them is the current onwership.  He
has no regard for the great Yankee tradition.  The early, late '70's on
the field success was in spite of George.  A baseball man named Gabe Paul
built that team, but he eventually tired of King George's interference.
Billy Martin is piece of Yankee "history" invented by Billy and George's
feud.  (A truly great Yankee like Yogi Berra will have nothing to do with
King George.) Take it from someone who observed Billy's playing career; his
trade to KC in 1957 was insignicant.  His tenure as 4-time manager was
an embaras***t.  Acquaint yourself with history, the best Yankee manager
since Stengel was Ralph Houk.  What has Showalter proven -- so he has a team
in first after about 100 games?  Were you equally impressed with Piniella
when he had the team in first?  At least Lou succeeded in Cincy when he got
out from under George.  I am relieved that you didn't go on to compare Jimmy
Key to Whitey Ford.  Comparing this Yankee team to the great post WWII teams
is like comparing Burt Reynolds at a dinner theatrer to Olivier at The Old Vic.

Key may win the Cy Young, but his only chance of winning the AL MVP is if Frank Thomas died
tommorrow and his stats were lost.  And then Will Clark would probably win it or something.

Big Yankee fan here also.  Also started in 60's (61 to be exact).  I was
born in '47 and my dad and brother wereBrooklyn Dodger fans (yes I lived in NY).
Anyway, when Dodgers left i lost interest in Baseball to be "Yanked" back
by the Maris-Mantle HR race in '61.
