BLue Jay's Talk

As expected Bell has filed, but the Jays apparently offered him
a 1 year 2 mil contract.  His shoulder and knees are a question.
I like Bell, but frankly I don't think that I'd offer him more
than that.

They also reacquired Sanchez from Cleveland in exchange for WIlli
Blair.  I'm happy about that because Sanchez was the only player
I had regretted losing in the Bud Black trade.  This may have been
a sneaky move.  Because Blair was on their ML roster at the
time the trade was made (& presumably they wanted him for the
drive) he couldn't be a "player-to-be-named-later," so they
sent Sanchez.  Apparently Cleveland didn't even contact Sanchez
(never had any interest in him?), and now after the dust has
settled the Jays get him back for Blair--apparently the player
that the Indians wanted (for some reason) all along.  The  Jays
also reacquired Nat Cromwell from Atlanta.

Also a suggesting in the paper that Felix isn't as young as
advertized, and that Gaston is tied of his and Hill's apparent
unwillingness to learn to play the outfield, and to a lesser
extent Ducey's.  Look for Mark Whitten to get a good shot at
RF next year and for Olerud in LF.  Apparently he ain't fast,
but he catches everything he gets to, and throws to the
right base or the appropriate cut-off man--unheard of on the Jays!

Agreed.  John Olerud can fill in for (and in a couple of years even outproduce)
George Bell in left.  I like him too, but to all good things there comes
an end.

Alex Sanchez has been the 'ace' that has never materialized for the Jays.
Three years ago he blew his way into Syracuse and has stagnated ever since.
I'm not sold on his ability because he has yet to produce at a major league
level (and he has had ample opportunity to win jobs on the rotation.)

An outfield of Olerud, Whiten and Felix is attractive to me.  I don't care about
Felix's age or lack of learning the outfield -- he has showed me enough.  Now
he just has to cut down on those K's....but then again, doesn't everyone?

RF Junior Felix
LF John Olerud
3B Kelly Gruber
1B Fred McGriff
DH Glenallen Hill/George Bell
CF Mark Whiten
C  Pat Borders/Greg Myers
SS Tony Fernandez
2B Luis Sojo

Now there's a lineup I can live with.

And Ed Sprague and Eddie Zosky coming around in a year or two.

He hasn't shown me enough. In addition to not hitting the cutoff man and
the wild throws over third base into the crowd, he looked very tentative
on short bloops into right.  Maybe I am excessively critical, or maybe Ducey
overly impressed me by comparison with his willingness to run into walls to
catch balls.   At the moment I'd rather have Whiten in right and keep Mookie
in centre.
