Cal beat up on Washington State tonight at Haas Pavilion, 80-46. Cal led,
36-20, at halftime, built that up to a 75-38 lead, and then all the
walk-ons came into the game with 5 minutes to go. Cal outrebounded WSU,
41-24 and had just 11 turnovers to WSU's 19.
Nick Vander Laan had another double-double, and he nearly had it at
halftime (9 points, 9 rebounds). Joe Shipp had 22 points, most coming in
the 2nd half when he, at one point, hit three 3-pointers in a row. WSU
just sucked -- not one player was in double figures for scoring.
Hard to tell anything about individual performances when the home team
just plays overall so much better than the other team. Plus, WSU has no
talent to begin with, so this was a nice reprieve from playing Oregon and
Oregon State on the road with Stanford and Arizona sandwiching those
games. Nice to get it out of the way, though.
Cal is now 11-7 (2-4 in the Pac 10) heading into Saturday's game with
Washington in Berkeley. Since Washington also sucks, I figure Cal will be
12-7 heading into the big games against USC and UCLA next week in L.A.
