: Today the Winston-Salem Journal reported that the Duane Simpkins
: suspension was imposed because he was forced to take a loan from a former
: coach after racking up $8,242 in parking tickets. The NCAA released the
: figure after rumors were circulating about the suspension.
: First of all, how is it even possible to rack up over $8,000 in tickets?
: I know he got a couple $500 dollar ones for having a fake handicapped
: permit, but $8,242 took some effort.
: Secondly, how stupid are you do to such a thing? Does he think he is
: God or something? Any halfway-intelligent individual in position would
: have paid the tickets in the first place. I know if I had so much as
: $100 dollars in tickets I'd feel like I was in big trouble. He had years
: to pay these things off. Hopefully he'll learn that just because he plays
: ACC basketball does not give him immunity.
: I'm glad that he was held accountable for the tickets. I'll bet a lot
: of schools would have swept in under the rug. Score one for Maryland and
: the NCAA (I never thought I'd say that).
I agree that 8,000 dollars in parking fines is crazy, but that's not what
he was suspended for. He was suspended for borrowing money from a former
coach, and I
think that the rules governing scholarship players are a little rough in
situation. Non athletic scholarship students can borrow money from
ANYONE they want to, but athletes can't accept money from anybody (except
family). This really sucks considering that athletes also can't hold
paying jobs while in school. If they can't get paid for work, then where
are they supposed to get money? I think that rules like these
really hurt scholarship athletes, and they make professional
sports very appealing to those who can make it to the next level. Simpkins
made a huge mistake,
both in running up those fines and in getting money from a former coach,
but remember that as a starter on a Div 1 b-ball team he helped bring in a
LOT more than $8,000 to the University of Maryland. I think the rules
have to be changed.
PS you're a bastard, I thought I had a real response to the solheim post!
