:   Today the Winston-Salem Journal reported that the Duane Simpkins
: suspension was imposed because he was forced to take a loan from a former
: coach after racking up $8,242 in parking tickets.  The NCAA released the
: figure after rumors were circulating about the suspension.
:   First of all, how is it even possible to rack up over $8,000 in tickets?
: I know he got a couple $500 dollar ones for having a fake handicapped
: permit, but $8,242 took some effort.
:   Secondly, how stupid are you do to such a thing?  Does he think he is
: God or something?  Any halfway-intelligent individual in position would
: have paid the tickets in the first place.  I know if I had so much as
: $100 dollars in tickets I'd feel like I was in big trouble.  He had years
: to pay these things off.  Hopefully he'll learn that just because he plays
: ACC basketball does not give him immunity.
:   I'm glad that he was held accountable for the tickets.  I'll bet a lot
: of schools would have swept in under the rug.  Score one for Maryland and
: the NCAA (I never thought I'd say that).

I agree that 8,000 dollars in parking fines is crazy, but that's not what
he was suspended for.  He was suspended for borrowing money from a former
coach, and I
think that the rules governing scholarship players are a little rough in
this
situation.   Non athletic scholarship students can borrow money from
ANYONE they want to, but athletes can't accept money from anybody (except
family).  This really sucks considering that athletes also can't hold
paying jobs while in school.  If they can't get paid for work, then where
are they supposed to get money?  I think that rules like these
really hurt scholarship athletes, and they make professional
sports very appealing to those who can make it to the next level.  Simpkins
made a huge mistake,
both in running up those fines and in getting money from a former coach,
but remember that as a starter on a Div 1 b-ball team he helped bring in a
LOT more than $8,000 to the University of Maryland.  I think the rules
have to be changed.

PS  you're a bastard, I thought I had a real response to the solheim post!

You've never dealt with the UMCP Parking Naz^H^H^HPolice, have you?

As someone else has already noted, the suspension was not about the
parking tickets per se, but rather about the fact that he borrowed the
money to make a downpayment on said tickets from a former coach, in
violation of NCAA rules.

If you want to claim he's an idiot for borrowing the money from this guy
_after_ being explicitly told not to do so, I won't argue with you. That
was dumb. Very dumb.

I might argue about the NCAA rule, though, or at least about the
interpretation of that rule... (As pointed out by someone writing for the
Post, Simpkins was more or less screwed- he couldn't even borrow the cash
from his multi-millionaire former roommate without running afoul of the
NCAA...)

I understand the motivation behind having such a rule, but the application
of the rule sometimes leaves much to be desired...

As telling as the number of tickets was the variety:

parking in handicapped spaces
the fake handicap state license
placing old tickets on the windshield to make it seem he already had
a ticket when parked illegally

and many of the plain old variety.

$2,000, what was initially reported, was within the realm of understanding
but $8,000 shows an absolute and flagrant disregard for the laws.

You know, if he walked everywhere he'd be in better shape anyway. :)

A lot of the NCAA rules are dumb, but Simpkins is dumber.  $8,272!!!
Christ - that literally took a focused effort.  I know he makes a lot of
money for Md., but playing and getting a full ride is enough.  I'd take
his type of scholarship in a second.

If you want that scholarship you're gonna have to learn to palm a
basketball first!  Oh sorry, wrong thread.

Look, I go to Cal, but I'm from D.C., and I know for a fact that the
Parking Nazis here are way worse than UMCP's.  As a matter of fact, I can
say with absolute certainty that if a Cal player racked up $8,000 in
parking fines, he would be a campus hero... heck, we'd probably take up a
collection for him... though that would no doubt be illegal according to
the NCAA.

If there's anything certain in this world, it's death, taxes, and the
fact that the NCAA is indubitably the stupidest, most narrow-minded,
nit-picking, head-up-their-ass bunch of feckless pencil-pushing
bureaucratic petty tyrants the world has ever seen.  Only an organization
so monumentally idiotic could make a scumball like Jerry Tarkanian into a
hero simply by virtue of making him their *** boy.

I have added Duane Simpkins to my pantheon of NCAA martyrs.  He'll be
receiving a plaque in the mail.  But he can't keep it, due to NCAA rules,
so please have him direct it to an appropriate charity.
