                     REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
          unmoderated group rec.sport.baseball.minor-leagues

Summary:          minor league baseball newsgroup proposal

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) on the subject of creating an
unmoderated Usenet newsgroup, rec.sport.baseball.minor-leagues.

This message initiates a discussion period to consider the creation of a
rec.sport.baseball.minor-leagues newsgroup. Discussion will take place on
news.groups. All follow-up posts should be made to news.groups.

Minor league baseball is a very popular branch of the sport, with rookie-
league, short-season A, low-A, high-A, AA, AAA, and independent leagues
playing across the United States and Canada. Leagues which effectively play at
American minor league level also play in Mexico, Taiwan, Australia, in Latin
America and the Caribbean, and some would say in Japan.

Minor league baseball is presently discussed in the USENET newsgroup
'alt.sports.baseball.minor-leagues', which is not widely carried, and on the
minors and minors-scores mailing lists.

A full-fledged Big 7 newsgroup would aid in discussion of minor league
baseball among those who don't care (or no longer care) to wade through the
immense amount of traffic in rec.sport.baseball and who cannot get the alt.*
group and who dislike the traffic levels occasionally present on the mailing
list.  Inasmuch as minor league baseball fandom is currently at all-time high
levels, a newsgroup on this subject would probably get scads o' traffic.

rec.sport.baseball.minor-leagues is devoted to professional baseball at
below-Major League levels, including 'organized baseball' teams affiliated
with American major league teams, independent leagues, minor-level leagues in
Mexico, Australia, Taiwan, Latin America, and elsewhere.  On the other hand,
rec.sport.baseball.minor-leagues is not appropriate for discussions of
American Legion, high school, and other forms of amateur baseball.
