                           BYU vs. Utah St.
                          December 14, 1993

BYU and Utah St. traditionally play home and home games every year. In
fact, only twice in the last 73 years have they played each other less
than twice a year, many years playing each other 4 times. This year,
however, they only meet once. The last time Utah St. beat BYU was in
1985. The Aggies will have to wait another year to try and beat the
Cougars as BYU defeated the Aggies 78-65 in Provo on Tuesday night.

Utah St. has a new coach, Larry Eustachy, but that didn't help break
the drought for Utah St. who have now lost 15 straight games to the
Cougars.

BYU didn't play all that well in the first half, shooting just over
38% for the half. Utah St. out rebounded the Cougars and out shot them
during that first half, but the Aggies didn't protect the ball very
well and were 5 of 10 from the free throw line during the opening
period. The result was a close, low scoring half which saw the two
teams tied at 15-15 after 10 minutes. BYU's free throw shooting and
USU's lack of it gave BYU a 6-point halftime lead of 32-26.

Utah St. cut that lead to 4 to start the second half, but then Russell
Larson took over the game, scoring 9 of BYU's first 11 points of the
second half. Larson hit a turnaround jumper and threw down a jam to
open BYU's scoring in the half. He then got a tip-in and, after Jay
Thompsons's turnaround jumper, drove hard to the basket and drew a
foul to complete a 3-point play. Just like that, BYU had a 10-point
43-33 lead and USU didn't get closer than 8 the rest of the way.

Utah St. out rebounded the Cougars 45-27, but gave up that advantage
with 20 turnovers.

Larson finished another outstanding game with 26 points, 12 rebounds,
and went 8 of 9 from the free throw line to cement the Cougars
victory. Kurt Christensen had his best game of the year with 15
points, a total which was matched by Randy Reid. Ken Roberts had
another steady game, scoring 11 points.
