Alabama players in NBA, does Carolina have the most?

Post by Jim Ba » Sat, 23 Sep 1995 04:00:00

From time to time, this topic comes up... I was wondering, which school
now has produced the most (active) NBA players?

With UNC and Alabama both adding two players this year, UNC probably
still has the lead.  I remember that Illinois had quite a few in the NBA,
but that was a couple of years ago.

I know Alabama has (at least):

Derrrick McKey
Jason Caffey
Antonio McDeyess
Hollywood Robinson
Latrell Sprewell
Robert Horry
David Ben-wah
Other?

Can anyone comment?

Sure.  Last year, when James Worthy retired the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets
took the lead from the Tarheels.  Tech added Travis Best.  So if everyone
else stays in the league and Carolina adds 2, they'll be tied again.
James Forrest should catch on (with Atlanta?) and Donald Williams might as
well (but I wouldn't bet on it.)

ACC still leads the pack.

didn't joe wolf (carolina) also retire?

make that three new additions for carolina.  gaurd derrick phelps was
picked up this summer by one of the expansion teams (toronto?).  i don't
think he's signed yet, though.

:    Which CBA team did Phelps play for, was it the Chicago team?  (Rockers??)

You are correct, Phelps played for the Chicago Rockers
last season and was runner-up for league ROY.

I know of these pro ex-Heels: Rick Fox, Eric Montross, Boston (cut Matt
Wenstrom); Hubert Davis, NY; Jerry Stackhouse, Scott Williams, Philly;
Rasheed Wallace, Wash.; Joe Wolf (prob.), Char.; Michael Jordan, Chi.;
Brad Daugherty, Cle.; Pete Chilcutt, Kenny Smith, Hou.; J. R. Reid, San
An; Derrick Phelps, Van.; George ***, Lakers; Sam Perkins, Seattle.
That's 15, which I'm pretty sure is the current record and may be some
sort of all-time one.
Cut Williams, Wolf, and Chilcutt to get down to 12 players and even I
could coach that team to a title!
I'll post again once I've actually counted other co-alum sets.

Maybe a current record, but consider the 70's to early 80's when
all those UCLA guys were playing in the league.  One early 80's
team sent *9* guys alone to the pros!
