Darry Ward and Pat Burrell

What's the status of the two?  Will they get a chance to play? Are there
rumors for Ward being traded or Brogna being traded to make room for the
two?  Also, are both of these players for real - or is it hype?  -scouting
report please!  I have both on my reserve rosters for $2 each. (NL-Ultra)

Thanks,

Paul

Everything I've seen says they are both for real.  But I haven't seen
anything yet on expected playing time for either of them.

I doubt Burrell will be in Philly before September at the earliset, but could
contend for the 1B job in 2000 if he continues to progress this year. My HUNCH
is that Daryl Ward will wind up as part of a package for a pitcher at
mid-season as the Astros try to add another arm for a late season run. Ward is
blocked at 1B and LF and even if Derek Bell gets traded as rumored (allowing
Alou to move to RF), he has fellow prospect Lance Berkman who is rated higher
than he.

Bagwell is a fixture in Houston.  They'd move the franchise before they move him,
so he's not going anywhere.  Ward is not an Ofer and will likely be packaged in a
deal for ... Randy Johnson????

Note that Brogna's contract is up in 1999.  My guess is that the Phillies will see
how Burrell does in the minors and give him a September shot  to see if they have
something (Cards did that with Drew).  If Burrell showcases well, he's the
starting 1b for the Phillies in 2000 and Brogna goes elsewhere.  If he doesn't
showcase well, Brogna gets a year's extension and Burrell tries his hand at AAA.

Regards,

Larry

Both are good hitters, neither will see much action in 99 though. I say both
guys real deal, not hype.

Actually, the Astros have used Ward in LF some because of the Bagwell Block in
front of him.

Isn't LF being renamed the Berkman Barricade?

LOL, yes it is. Thus, the reasoning that Ward gets traded---just making the
point he may be capable of playing somewhere other than 1B.
