BYU Report: BYU vs. Fresno St.  February 19, 1993

FINAL SCORE: BYU 90, Fresno St. 74

BYU plays three straight home games against what SHOULD be fairly easy
opponents. I emphasize SHOULD, because we all know that with the
Cougars, anything is possible. These three home games are really just
tune ups for the big show one week from Saturday in Salt Lake City
against the Utes. The winner of that game will have one leg up on the
championship going into the UTEP-New Mexico road swing which will
decide the regular season WAC champion.

Kevin Nixon has recovered from his injury but hasn't yet regained the
form he showed before. His progress was slowed this week due to the
flu which prevented him from practicing.

Gary Trost with 20+ stitches in his face and visible bruises did
indeed start the game against Fresno St. as he promised he would.
Trost wasn't tenative in the game either as he gathered 19 points,
seven rebounds, and seven assists to lead the Cougars in points and
assists. Trost shot 100% from the free throw line (9-9) and joked that
the accident had straightened out his vision.

Kurt Christensen also had a good game, going 5 for 5 from the field.
Ryan Cuff had one his best games in some time scoring ten points
including two 3-pointers.

Fresno hung close to the Cougars through the opening portion of the
game. They were within three points at 29-26 before left BYU them in
the dust, outscoring them 18-1 to end the first half with a cozy 20-
point lead. In the second half, the Bulldogs played pretty much even
with the Cougars and even managed to trim 4 points from the the
Cougars lead by the end of the game. The Cougars substituted liberally
in the second half and breezed to a 90-74 victory.

BYU's victory was their 11th straight which is the 3rd longest winning
streak in the country at the current time. BYU's winning streak
started with Fresno St. Hopefully, Fresno St. wasn't the bookends of
the winning streak. The Cougars should be able to extend the streak on
Saturday against the Cadets of Air Force.

One other note, Fresno State's big man Hines weighs in at something
over 300 pounds. They've nick-named him "Dunkin" Hines. After
watching Shaquille O'Neal pull down the back boards in Phoenix, BYU
staff added 250 pounds of weight to the bases of the baskets in
case Hines felt the urge to try to copy O'Neal's performance.
