BYU Report: BYU vs. SMU  NCAA first round

FINAL SCORE: BYU 80, SMU 71.

BYU took on the Mustangs of SMU in the first round of the NCAA
tournament in Chicago on Thursday. BYU was seeded 7th in the mid-west
regional while SMU was seeded 10th. This game had a lot similarities t
to last week's New Mexico game. BYU got the big lead only to see the
other team come roaring back. But this time BYU held on for the win.

BYU started out very hot as they scored the first 9 points of the
game. Russell Larson, who has seen limited playing time and limited
scoring as of late, scored 8 of BYU's first 17 points and was 4 of 4
to start the game. BYU's big guys were *** over the shorter
Mustangs and were scoring easy baskets inside and grabbing all the
rebounds. For the second game in a row, Trost scored a 3-pointer to
aid BYU's run.

BYU had stretched their lead to 14-point advantage at 29-15 when SMU
called timeout with eight minutes left in the half. Following the
timeout, SMU embarked upon a 12-2 run that brought them within two
points of the Cougars at 31-29. As in the New Mexico game last week,
BYU seemed to grab a comfortable lead then abandon the game plan that
got them there - namely getting the ball inside to the big guys.
Instead, BYU started shooting from outside and missing.

Nick Sanderson finally stopped the bleeding for the Cougars as he hit
a three-pointer to give BYU a  five point advantage. BYU held on to
take a 4-point, 37-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.

At the start of the second half, SMU pulled within two points of the
Cougars several times and had opportunities to tie or take the lead
but were thwarted each time. After about 5 minutes, BYU pulled out to
a 7-point 46-39 lead. SMU cut the lead back to two at 52-50, but the
Cougars outscored the Mustangs 9 to 1 to grab at 61-51 lead with 7:45
left.

BYU maintained an 8 to 10 point lead until about 3 minutes left in the
game when they turned the ball over four consecutive times and allowed
the Mustangs to close to within five points. Again, the Mustangs had
opportunities to pull within a couple of points, but their outside
shooting was awful. The Cougars managed to hang on with good foul
shooting and BYU claimed a 9-point victory with a final score of
80-71.

BYU advances to the second round and will meet Kansas on Saturday.

Trost led all BYU scorers again with 26 points. Russell Larson had 19
points, his second highest output of the season. Reid had told Larson
to play harder and get more aggressive if he wanted to stay on the
floor after starting the game. Looks like the motivational talk paid
off.
