This is the first official call for discussion on the creation of the
newsgroup rec.sport.baseball.college.

Newsgroup NAME:  rec.sport.baseball.college

Newsgroup STATUS:  Unmoderated

Charter:  To provide a forum for discussion of baseball on a
collegiate level.

Purpose for creation: To 1) encourage discussion of baseball programs
in the universities all across the U.S. and 2) group them into one
specific area where concentrated discussion can be achieved without
being 'drowned out' by the incredible volume that professional
baseball gets on rec.sport.baseball.

Initial Discussion: The topic was first introduced in June of 1991
during the Collegiate Playoffs/World Series, when several posters
expressed a concern that rec.sport.baseball was too large of a forum
for discussions about collegiate baseball.
A 'feeler' post was made two weeks ago by myself on the subject of
rec.sport.baseball.college on rec.sport.baseball, and I received
several supportive mail messages encouraging the creation of the
group -- and one negative post to the newsgroup rec.sport.baseball.

The discussion period will be for three weeks (Jan. 17th - Feb. 7th)
If a consensus is reached on name, status and charter by that time, I
will proceed with a call for votes.

Why don't we just make two or three new groups and get rid of
the original rec.sport.baseball. I would be in favor of making the
groups r.s.baseball.college, r.s.b.pro, and renaming r.s.b to
r.s.b.misc (and rmgrouping r.s.b after a certain time). I believe that
college and pro are self explanatory, and misc would cover everything
else, from foriegn/winter league discussions to H.S/Little League (ie
the World Series)/whatever else. This would seem to me to be the best
long term solution. But, if the majority decide not to try a reorg
now, I am in favor of the r.s.b.college proposal as it stands.

Here's the story:

An official Call for Votes was sent to news.announce.newgroups but the
director of that list told me to "hold off" on calling for the votes
for the set-up of a "usa" heirarchy.  It seems that people around the
world (i.e. not in US) are bound and determined to vote NO against
rec.sport.baseball.college.
I told the moderator that I could wait a week for this "heirarchy" to
be proposed.  He said a proposal should be out by the weekend - that
was a week ago.

Tomorrow I am resubmitting the Call for Votes.  Hopefully, the call
will be posted and Voting will start on Monday.

Thank you for your patience.  8)
