Unfortunately, Joe's grade was not good enough to qualify for the award.
According to the Post, you need at least a 2.0 GPA to be eligible.

Doesn't Joe Smith have a 2.0 GPA?  I thought that was the minimum
requirement to be academically eligible to play sports in the NCAA.
So if he doesn't have a 2.0, how come he's able to play for
Maryland?

I don't know if you guys will buy this idea, but I believe UMd has a policy
of non-disclosure of GPA.  Sounds like a lame way of saying Joe's GPA is
under 2.0, but the Post article doesn't explicitly _say_ his GPA is sub-2.0, does it?

I know you have to have a 2.0 in high school, but other than that, I don't
know what the requirement is in college.

The NCAA only requires that players be "in good academic standing." Member
schools determine what grade point average meets that criteria.

Needless to say, good academic standing at the University of Maryland and
Oklahoma St. (or at least for star basketball players) doesn't necessarily
mean a 2.0 GPA.

Peace.
