fought as a heavyweight in 1960. Floyd Patterson was the heavyweight
champion in 1960. While I feel Ali was a better fighter than
Patterson, he wouldn't have had enough experience to beat someone like
Ali's first pro fight was at what would be called cruiser weight now
(192 lbs) against Tunny Hunsaker (186 lbs). That was in late 1960
shortly after the Olympics. It was a 6 round fight which he won by
His first over 200 lb. fight came 2 years later against,
coincidentally, Archie Moore. Ali weighed 204, Moore 191. Ali won
but Moore was 46 years old at the time.
He won his first heavyweight title in 1964, about 3.5 years after the
Olympics, against Sonny Liston. Ali weight 210.5 for that bout and
Liston 215, light by today's standards. A year later Ali fought Floyd
Patterson and beat him by a 12th round TKO. Patterson was 30 years
old at the time but weighed less than 200.
