Ezzard Charles has not ever gotten the recognition he deserves.

Charles was a middleweight/light heavyweight, taking on excess poundage to go against the bigger fighters. He fought at a time when heavies were simply smaller, better boxers, and with little real power. His cleverness rested in the ability to do well against bigger fighter. As time wore, however, he was subject to many losses, severe punishment and an early death.

Later in his career he became one of those "stepping stone" fighters -
a tough guy that if you beat meant something.  That was due to his
early successes.  Perhaps if he had stayed at middleweight he may have
enjoyed a better career.

Probably not true; over the years, many experts have testified as to his ability. That rematch with Rocky set him up for all those losses later on.

In the days of Rocky Marciano's reign, not many of his opponents went on to a better career after he beat them up.

I could be wrong but I heard that Ezzard Charles died of some form of muscular dystrophy, not anything related to trauma from boxing.

He died at the age of 53 from Lou Gherig's Disease ( amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis).

Well founded comments from DCI and sugarlanskee. Also, his boxing skills have been greatly underrated by many. ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b0yHvw-vW0

Ez lost 13 fights after the second loss to the Rock, messing up his record. Ez is the only man to have fought George Logan and Ken Overlin.
